Flavoured Creatine

Compare flavoured creatine on the grams of creatine per scoop, the sweeteners and any extra ingredients, and the cost per day. The creatine works the same as in plain powder; what you pay for is the taste, and sometimes a smaller dose of creatine per scoop.

Is flavoured creatine as good as unflavoured?

Yes, if it gives you the same amount of creatine. The flavouring changes the taste, not the creatine, so the thing to check is grams of creatine per serving.

Most products here use creatine monohydrate, the form a 2022 review calls the only source of creatine with substantial evidence on absorption, effectiveness and safety. Some flavoured products use other forms, such as creatine HCl or buffered creatine; our guide to creatine monohydrate vs other types explains the differences.

Does flavoured creatine have less creatine per scoop?

Often, yes, per gram of powder. Flavourings, sweeteners and acids take up part of each scoop, so a 6 g scoop of flavoured powder may hold less than 6 g of creatine.

That is why the scoop weight is not the number to compare. Look on the nutrition panel for the grams of creatine per serving, and check it reaches the 3–5 g a day the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) says generally maintains muscle creatine stores.

Example label (not real products) Scoop size Creatine per scoop Creatine as % of scoop
Unflavoured monohydrate 5 g 5 g 100%
Flavoured monohydrate 6 g 5 g About 83%
Flavoured creatine drink mix 10 g 3 g 30%

Is flavoured creatine bad for you?

That depends on what else is in it. Flavoured creatine contains more than creatine, so read the full ingredient list. UK labelling law requires products with sweeteners to say "with sweetener(s)", and products with more than 10% added polyols must warn that "excessive consumption may produce laxative effects".

Some flavoured creatine products include other active ingredients, and some may contain caffeine, so check the label. EFSA says single doses of up to 200mg and up to 400mg a day do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults, and up to 200mg a day if you are pregnant, and that limit counts caffeine from all sources, including coffee and energy drinks.

Does flavoured creatine break a fast?

It might. Unflavoured creatine has essentially no calories, but some flavoured powders, drink mixes and gummies contain sugar or other carbohydrates.

Check the energy (kcal) and sugar figures per serving on the nutrition panel if that matters to you. Gummies and chews in this collection are likely to contain sugar or sweeteners; compare them on our creatine gummies page.

Can you mix unflavoured creatine into a drink instead?

Yes. Unflavoured creatine monohydrate can be stirred into juice, squash or a protein shake. The ISSN notes that taking creatine with carbohydrate, or carbohydrate and protein, has been reported to increase creatine retention more consistently.

Creatine monohydrate doesn't dissolve easily in cold liquid: a 2022 review puts its solubility at about 14 g per litre at 20°C, so some sediment is normal. If plain powder is the bit you dislike, a flavoured product saves you that step.

Is flavoured creatine worth the extra cost?

That depends on whether the taste helps you take it every day. You usually pay more per gram of creatine for flavoured powder.

How to compare value (example figures, not real products): a £20 tub of 300g flavoured creatine with 5 g of creatine in each 6 g scoop gives 50 servings, 40p a day. A £20 tub of 500g unflavoured creatine at 5 g a scoop gives 100 servings, 20p a day. Same price on the shelf, twice the cost per day.

"We think customers should compare the actual amount of active ingredients they're getting, rather than just the format or marketing," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ.

How to choose flavoured creatine

Check the form of creatine and the grams per serving first, then any other active ingredients, the sweeteners and the cost per day. Flavour comes last, though it matters if it's the reason you'll keep taking it.

The authorised health claim for creatine is that it "increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise". It can only be used where a product provides a daily intake of 3 g of creatine, and only for adults performing high-intensity exercise.

"Comparing creatine isn't as simple as the price on the packaging," says Andy. If your flavoured product also contains other active ingredients, see creatine blends; for plain powder, see creatine monohydrate or all creatine.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
