What is Creapure®?

Creapure® is a branded creatine monohydrate. Its maker describes it as pure creatine monohydrate from Germany, tested and traceable, and the company behind it is Alzchem Group AG, based in Trostberg, Germany.

Creapure® is an ingredient, not a supplement brand. Sports nutrition companies buy it and put it in their own products, which is why you will see it named on tubs, capsules and chews from several different brands.

Is Creapure better than creatine monohydrate?

Creapure® is creatine monohydrate, so the creatine itself is the same as in any pure creatine monohydrate. The difference is where it comes from and the quality assurance behind it, not the creatine itself.

Creatine monohydrate is the form with the strongest evidence: a 2022 review describes it as the only source of creatine with substantial evidence for absorption, effectiveness and safety. We have not found studies showing Creapure® produces different results from other pure creatine monohydrate. If you want the background on forms, see our guide to creatine monohydrate vs other types.

How can you tell if a product contains genuine Creapure?

Look for the Creapure® quality seal on the pack. Creapure says the seal carries a 6-digit code you can enter on its website to check whether the product belongs to its partner network.

A product title that mentions Creapure® is a good start, but check the label and the seal for yourself. Some products only use Creapure® as one ingredient among several, so the seal tells you about the creatine, not the rest of the formula.

Is Creapure worth the extra cost?

It depends on how much you value a named, traceable source. You are paying for origin and quality assurance; you are not getting more creatine per gram.

How to compare value (example figures, not real products): a £35 tub of 500g Creapure® creatine at 5 g a day gives 100 servings, 35p a day. A £20 tub of 500g unbranded creatine monohydrate gives the same 100 servings at 20p a day. Over a year of daily use that is about £128 compared with £73, a difference of roughly £55 for the same amount of creatine.

"Sometimes the premium is justified by formulation, testing or ingredient quality, but sometimes customers are paying mainly for branding," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ.

How much Creapure should you take a day?

The same as any creatine monohydrate: the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) says 3–5 g a day generally maintains muscle creatine stores once they are full. A loading phase of 5 g four times a day for 5–7 days fills them faster but is optional.

The authorised health claim for creatine is that it "increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise". It can only be used where a product provides a daily intake of 3 g of creatine, and only for adults performing high-intensity exercise.

Creapure powder, capsules or chews?

This collection includes Creapure® powder, capsules and chews, so compare the grams of creatine per daily serving and the cost of that serving. Powder usually costs the least per gram; capsules and chews cost more for convenience. Browse creatine tablets and capsules or creatine gummies and chews for more options.

Some products in this collection are pre-workouts or energy blends that may contain caffeine, so check the label. EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) says single doses of up to 200mg and up to 400mg a day are acceptable for healthy adults, and up to 200mg a day if you are pregnant, and that limit counts caffeine from all sources, including coffee and energy drinks.

Does Creapure have side effects?

Creapure® has the same side-effect profile as other creatine monohydrate. The most common is a small early weight gain from water, and a 2021 ISSN review found creatine does not result in kidney damage in healthy individuals.

If you have a kidney condition or another medical condition, take medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking creatine.

Which Creapure creatine should you choose?

Choose the format you will take every day, then compare the grams of creatine per serving and the cost per day. The Creapure® name tells you about the source of the creatine; it does not make one product better value than another.

"Comparing creatine isn't as simple as the price on the packaging," says Andy. If you are happy with any pure creatine monohydrate, compare the wider range in creatine monohydrate or all creatine.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
