What is a pump pre-workout?

A pump pre-workout is a product marketed for the "pump", the full, tight feeling in a muscle during resistance training. The products in this collection are mostly built around citrulline, arginine (including AAKG, arginine alpha-ketoglutarate), glycerol and beetroot, and some also contain caffeine.

"Pump" isn't a regulated term or an authorised health claim. There is no permitted claim for citrulline, arginine, nitrate or beetroot in the GB register of authorised health claims, so we describe the ingredients rather than what a product will do for you.

What ingredients are in pump supplements?

The most common are citrulline (often as citrulline malate), arginine or AAKG, glycerol and nitrates from beetroot. Many also add beta-alanine, taurine or caffeine.

Ingredient What the review evidence says
Citrulline Amounts in pre-workouts are generally far lower than those that have shown effects in studies
Arginine Most evidence suggests limited effect on blood flow or exercise performance
Nitrate (beetroot) Appears to help endurance and high-intensity exercise at 300mg or more
Beta-alanine Studied at 4 to 6g a day for at least two to four weeks; can cause tingling
Caffeine Well studied at moderate doses; side effects rise with the dose

The citrulline, arginine and nitrate summaries come from a review of multi-ingredient pre-workout supplements in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. The beta-alanine row is from the ISSN beta-alanine position stand, and the caffeine row from the ISSN caffeine position stand.

Does pre-workout give you a pump?

The research doesn't let us promise that. The pump is a feeling during training, and the review evidence for the classic "pump" ingredients is mixed: arginine shows limited effect, and citrulline is usually included at lower amounts than studies have used.

"Adding more ingredients doesn't automatically make a product more effective. Each ingredient needs a clear purpose, an appropriate dose and evidence supporting its intended use," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ. Compare the amounts on the label with the research amounts above.

Are pump pre-workouts stim-free?

Some are and some aren't. This collection includes both stim-free pump products and pre-workouts that combine pump ingredients with caffeine, so check the label before you buy.

Products with added caffeine must state it: the label must carry "Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women", with the caffeine per daily portion. If caffeine is listed, add it to your daily total; EFSA says up to 400mg a day, spread through the day, and single doses up to 200mg do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults, apart from pregnant women. For caffeine-free options, see stim-free pre-workouts.

Can you take a pump pre-workout with a regular pre-workout?

People do combine them, but check both labels first so you don't double up on caffeine or other ingredients. A pump product with caffeine plus a caffeinated pre-workout can take you past the single-dose figure in one go.

The UK government's advice is to consider the cumulative amount of caffeine from all caffeinated products, including tea, coffee and energy drinks. If one product is stim-free, the caffeine question doesn't arise, but check for overlapping ingredients such as beta-alanine.

Proprietary blend or fully dosed label?

A fully disclosed label lists the amount of every ingredient; a proprietary blend gives one total for several ingredients. The pre-workout review notes widespread use of proprietary blends that don't disclose specific amounts, which makes it hard to tell whether a product contains the amounts used in research.

"Some brands also use proprietary blends, making it difficult to establish exactly how much of each active ingredient you're getting. Others clearly disclose their ingredient quantities, making comparisons much easier," says Andy.

How do you compare value on pump supplements?

Work out the cost per full-strength serving, then the cost of the ingredient you care about. That's simplest with single-ingredient products, such as citrulline powders.

How to compare value (example figures, not real products): a £30 pump pre-workout with 25 servings costs £1.20 a serving and lists 4g of citrulline per serving. A £15 tub of citrulline powder with 50 servings of 4g costs 30p for the same 4g. The pre-workout contains other ingredients too, so it isn't a like-for-like swap, but the sums show what you pay for each part.

Is pump pre-workout safe?

The pre-workout review found these products appear relatively safe in studies, though most lasted less than eight weeks, and warned that some formulations may contain banned substances as ingredients or contaminants.

Follow the directions on the label. If you have a medical condition, take medication (including blood-pressure medication), or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP or pharmacist before using any pre-workout. Compare the whole range in our pre-workout guide.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
