Clear Whey Protein

Compare clear whey protein on the protein per serving, what's added for flavour, and the cost per 25g of protein. Clear whey is whey isolate made to mix into a thin, juice-style drink instead of a milky shake: it is a taste and texture choice, and it is often priced higher per gram of protein than standard whey, so the maths matters.

What is clear whey protein?

Clear whey is usually whey protein isolate processed so that it dissolves into a clear, thin drink, typically in fruit flavours, mixed with cold water. The products in this collection are clear wheys and clear-style isolates, and one adds collagen.

Where it is made from whey, it still comes from milk, so the protein is the same kind you find in a standard isolate shake; check the ingredients list to confirm the protein source. What changes is the taste, the texture and usually the price.

Why is clear whey clear?

Because it is made acidic. Research on whey protein drinks explains that they need to be made at a pH of approximately 3.4 to stay clear, roughly as acidic as a fruit juice.

The same research found that at that pH whey drinks can become astringent, meaning a dry, puckering feel in the mouth, and that the type of acid used affects how strong it is. That is why clear whey tastes more like a sharp soft drink than a milkshake, and why flavours vary so much between brands.

Is clear whey as good as normal whey?

For protein, yes: it is whey isolate, so you compare it on grams of protein per serving like any other whey. Where a product is at least a source of protein, the same authorised claim applies: protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass.

The catch is serving size. Clear products often give a little less protein per serving than a standard isolate shake (one title in this collection states 21g), so check the label and compare per 25g of protein.

Clear whey vs regular whey: what's different?

The main differences are texture, how you mix it, and what is added to make it taste right. Here is a quick side-by-side:

Clear whey Standard whey shake
Texture Thin, like squash or juice Thicker and milky
Whey type Isolate Concentrate, isolate or a blend
Usually mixed with Cold water Water or milk
Check on the label Protein per serving, acids, sweeteners, colours Protein per serving, lactose, sweeteners

Clear whey can foam when shaken, so follow the mixing directions on the label. If you prefer a creamy shake, browse all whey protein instead.

Is clear whey vegan or dairy free?

No. Clear whey is made from milk, and milk is one of the 14 allergens that must be emphasised within the ingredients list, even when the drink looks nothing like milk. It is not suitable if you have a milk allergy or follow a vegan diet.

"Vegan clear protein" products are made from plant proteins instead: see vegan protein.

What about clear whey with collagen?

Clear whey with collagen combines two different proteins, so the protein figure on the label is a total of both. The ingredients list is in descending order of weight, which tells you which one makes up more of the product, but not always how much.

"Adding more ingredients doesn't automatically make a product more effective. Each ingredient needs a clear purpose, an appropriate dose and evidence supporting its intended use," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ. If collagen is what you're after, compare it on its own in collagen.

What's added to clear whey?

Usually acids, flavourings, sweeteners and sometimes colours, because the drink has to taste like fruit rather than milk. In the UK, additives must be assessed for safety before they can be used in food, and the label must say what each one does, followed by its name or E number.

A "low sugars" claim on a powder means no more than 5g of sugars per 100g. "My biggest takeaway from sourcing these products is that customers need more transparency, not more marketing claims," says Andy.

How do you compare clear whey on value?

Calculate the cost per 25g of protein, and compare it with a standard isolate as well as with other clear wheys. Smaller pouches and tubs are common in this category, which makes the per-tub price look low.

How to compare value (example figures, not real products): Clear whey A costs £30 for 500g, with 20g of protein per 25g serving: 20 servings, 400g of protein, about £1.88 per 25g. Standard isolate B costs £36 for 1kg, with 27g of protein per 30g scoop: 33 servings, 900g of protein, £1.00 per 25g. In this example you pay about 88% more per 25g of protein for the clear format. Compare across all protein powder.
