Limited
evidence for mixed creatine forms
Our honest take
A sugar-free orange drink that combines several creatine forms with BCAAs, arginine, glutamine and some vitamins and minerals. The supplier states 3 g of creatine per serving, but older listings show a different formula, so we have not put a price per dose on it until we confirm the current label. Per gram of creatine it is far more expensive than plain monohydrate, and the extra amino acids add little if you eat enough protein.
- You want a flavoured, sugar-free creatine drink with added extras
- You want to know exactly what you are getting: we are confirming the current label
- Cost per dose matters: plain monohydrate is far cheaper
- You already eat plenty of protein: the BCAAs add little
The science
Mixed creatine forms· evidence: Limited
Some products mix several types of creatine, such as citrate, pyruvate, malate, magnesium chelate, ethyl ester or alpha-ketoglutarate, often under a branded blend name. The idea is that each form adds something, but there is no good evidence that a mix works better than the same amount of plain creatine monohydrate. One form, creatine ethyl ester, did worse than monohydrate in a controlled study because more of it broke down before reaching the muscle.
The main practical problem is that blends often do not say how much actual creatine you get, which makes it hard to check you reach 3 g a day.
Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine.
Typical dose: Enough to provide 3 g of creatine a day; check the label
Safety: Same general precautions as creatine monohydrate. Speak to your GP first if you have a kidney condition.
