Our honest take
One capsule gives 340 mg shatavari root extract, 153 mg Japanese knotweed extract (150 mg trans-resveratrol), 60 mg maritime pine bark extract, 30 mg black cohosh root extract, 18 mg pantothenic acid and 5 mg vitamin B6 as P-5-P. The two B vitamins are the only ingredients that can carry authorised claims; the plant extracts have little evidence, and we make no claims about hormonal conditions. Black cohosh has been linked to rare liver problems, so stop and see your GP if you notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine or tummy pain.
- You want B5 and B6 in a vegan capsule and are happy with the botanical extras
- You want to try a small pack first
- You have, or have had, liver problems: it contains black cohosh
- You use hormonal contraception, HRT or blood thinners and have not checked the plant extracts with your GP or pharmacist
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a hormone-sensitive condition
The science
Resveratrol· evidence: Insufficient
Resveratrol is a plant compound found in grape skins, red wine, peanuts and Japanese knotweed, which is the usual source for supplements. Much of the interest comes from laboratory and animal studies on ageing.
Human trials are small and short, and their results have been inconsistent; it is also poorly absorbed. There are no authorised health claims for resveratrol, so we make no claims about what it does. Products that pair it with 'NAD+' are based on early-stage research, and swallowed NAD+ itself is largely broken down before it is absorbed.
Typical dose: Supplements typically give 100 to 500 mg a day. EFSA considers up to 150 mg a day of trans-resveratrol safe for adults as a novel food.
Safety: Higher doses can upset the stomach. Resveratrol may add to the effect of blood thinners and affect how some medicines are broken down. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and speak to your GP first if you take regular medication or have a hormone-sensitive condition.
