Our honest take
Plain myo-inositol at 600 mg per capsule. Most studies have used 2 to 4 g a day, which would mean four to seven capsules, so a pack of 100 would not last long at those amounts; inositol powder is usually far better value at study doses. There are no authorised claims for inositol and we make no claims about any condition; if you are considering it for a medical or fertility reason, speak to your GP or specialist first.
- You want a small, measured amount of myo-inositol in capsule form
- You prefer capsules to measuring out powder
- You want the 2 to 4 g a day used in most studies at a sensible cost (a powder is cheaper)
- You take diabetes medicines, unless your GP agrees
- You are pregnant or trying to conceive and have not discussed it with your GP or specialist
The science
Myo-inositol· evidence: Limited
Myo-inositol is a sugar-alcohol the body makes itself and gets from fruit, beans and grains. It plays a part in how cells respond to insulin and some hormones.
Most studies have been in women with specific hormonal conditions, usually at 2 to 4 g a day, and have shown some positive but inconsistent results; many are small. There are no authorised health claims for inositol, so we make no claims about what it does. If you are considering it for a medical condition or fertility, speak to your GP or specialist first.
Typical dose: Studies have commonly used 2 to 4 g a day, often split into two doses.
Safety: Generally well tolerated; higher doses can cause nausea, wind or loose stools. Speak to your GP first if you take diabetes medicines, as it may affect blood sugar, or if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.
