Does collagen help joints?

The evidence is mixed. Versus Arthritis says trials into collagen's role in treating osteoarthritis give mixed results, and that in rheumatoid arthritis collagen doesn't have a significant effect on pain and joint inflammation overall.

Which?, looking mainly at skin, says any changes are likely to be small and that very few long-term studies have been done. Collagen has no authorised health claims, so we don't say these products do anything for your joints. If you have joint pain, speak to your GP or a pharmacist.

What is type 2 collagen?

Type II collagen is the type found in cartilage, according to Which?. Products sold as type II collagen usually contain very small amounts compared with hydrolysed collagen powders.

Versus Arthritis says studies have used daily doses of between 1 and 10g of collagen hydrolysate and 0.1 to 10mg of chicken or bovine type II collagen, and that the best dose isn't yet known. So compare like with like: milligrams of type II against type II, grams of hydrolysed collagen against hydrolysed collagen.

Which ingredients have authorised claims?

Vitamin C does. Where a product is at least a source of vitamin C, it can say "vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage" and "vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones".

Those claims belong to the vitamin C, not the collagen. Some products here also contain whey protein, and the rest of the collagen range and our joint support collection include other formulas; check each label for the amount of every ingredient per daily serving.

Is collagen for joints safe?

Collagen is generally considered well tolerated: Versus Arthritis says it has no major side-effects, though some people report stomach heaviness, mild diarrhoea or rashes.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking a supplement if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition or take medication. Marine collagen comes from fish, so check the allergen information on the label.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
