evidence for collagen peptides (hydrolysed collagen)

Our honest take

Unflavoured bovine collagen peptides using Fortibone, a branded peptide marketed for bones and joints, with rose hip extract for vitamin C. A 5.1 g serving is in the range used in collagen studies, but those studies are few and mostly funded by the makers, and there is no authorised health claim for collagen. We could not confirm how much vitamin C each serving gives.

  • You want a plain, unflavoured collagen to stir into drinks or food
  • You want a single branded collagen with nothing else added
  • You are vegetarian or vegan (bovine collagen)
  • You are under 12, pregnant or breastfeeding (the maker advises checking first)
  • You want collagen for muscle: complete proteins such as whey do more
The science

Collagen peptides (hydrolysed collagen)· evidence: Limited

Collagen peptides are collagen from cow hide, pig skin, fish skin or chicken broken down into small pieces so they dissolve easily. The body digests them into amino acids and small peptides; it does not move the collagen straight to your skin or joints. Branded peptides (such as Verisol, Fortigel, Fortibone, Tendoforte, Naticol or Peptan) are marketed for particular uses.

For skin, many trials report small improvements in skin moisture or elasticity at 2.5–10 g a day, but a 2023 review found that the positive results came mainly from studies funded by the industry, while independent studies tended to find no effect. For joints and tendons, the evidence is smaller still: a few trials, mostly in athletes or older adults, mostly industry-linked, at 5–10 g a day.

There is no authorised health claim for collagen itself, so we make no claims about skin, joints or tendons. Any claim on a collagen product comes from added vitamins such as vitamin C. As a protein source it is incomplete, so it is not a good choice for building muscle.

Typical dose: Studies mostly used 2.5–10 g a day; many capsule products give far less

Safety: Made from animal or fish sources, so not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. Check the source if you have a fish allergy or avoid beef or pork. Generally well tolerated.

Ingredients & nutrition

Ingredients: Fortibone bioactive collagen peptides (bovine), rose hip fruit extract (20:1, standardised to at least 70% vitamin C).

Per serving: about 5.1 g of collagen peptides. The amount of vitamin C per serving is not confirmed.

Pack: 153 g tub (about 30 servings) or a single 5.1 g sachet.

Dietary: from cows; not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. No allergens declared on the retailer listing we found.

The retailer listing we found gave 2.3 g protein per scoop, which does not match a 5.1 g serving; check the pack.

Always check the pack you receive, as manufacturers sometimes update recipes.
