Compare bovine collagen on the grams of collagen in each daily serving, any added ingredients and the cost per gram. Bovine collagen comes from cattle, isn't automatically halal and, like all collagen, has no authorised health claims.

What is bovine collagen?

Bovine collagen is collagen taken from cattle, usually from the hides or bones. Which? says bovine collagen is rich in types I and III collagen; type I is the most abundant in the body, and type III is found in skin, muscles and blood vessels.

Most bovine collagen supplements are hydrolysed, meaning broken down into short chains called peptides, so "bovine collagen peptides" and "hydrolysed bovine collagen" mean much the same thing. Some products in this collection describe their source as grass-fed; check the label for what that means for the product.

What are the benefits of bovine collagen?

There are no authorised health claims for collagen, so we don't list benefits. Which? says there is still no scientific consensus that collagen supplements improve skin, any changes are likely to be small, very few long-term studies exist, and many studies are part- or fully funded by companies.

For joints, Versus Arthritis says trials into collagen's role in osteoarthritis give mixed results. "Where evidence is limited or inconclusive, we should say so openly," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ.

Bovine vs marine collagen: what's the difference?

The main difference is the source: bovine comes from cattle and marine from fish. Which? says marine is in theory more easily absorbed and bovine is often suggested for joints, but not enough research has been done to confirm it.

Practical differences matter more: marine collagen is a fish allergen and suits pescatarians, while bovine collagen isn't suitable for vegetarians and isn't automatically halal. "Neither source is automatically superior for every intended benefit," says Andy. Compare marine collagen.

Is bovine collagen halal?

Not automatically. Which? says you cannot assume collagen supplements are halal or kosher, so look for halal certification of the finished product on the label.

"The animal source, slaughter method, processing and supply chain must meet the relevant requirements," says Andy. Capsule shells and other ingredients count too, so check the whole product, not just the collagen.

How much bovine collagen should you take a day?

There's no official recommended amount. Versus Arthritis says studies have used daily doses of between 1 and 10g of collagen hydrolysate, and the best dose isn't yet known, so follow the label and don't exceed the stated daily serving.

How to compare value (example figures, not real products): a £24 tub of 400g bovine collagen with a 10g serving gives 40 servings at 60p a day, or 6p per gram. A £20 tub of 300g with a 15g serving gives 20 servings at £1 a day, about 7p per gram. The second costs more per day mainly because the serving is bigger, while the cost per gram is similar. Browse collagen powder.

Should bovine collagen contain vitamin C?

It doesn't have to, but several products here add it. Where a product is at least a source of vitamin C, it can say "vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin".

That claim is about the vitamin C, not the collagen. Some products also add biotin; see biotin for how much is in a typical daily dose, and count vitamins across everything you take.

Bovine collagen powder or tablets?

Powder usually gives you far more collagen per day for the money; tablets and capsules are convenient but often contain much less. Compare the grams of collagen in a full daily serving, not per tablet.

"Some powders provide 10g of collagen per serving, while gummies and capsules often provide considerably less," says Andy. Check the format and serving on each product, and browse collagen tablets and capsules for other formats.

Is bovine collagen safe?

Collagen is generally considered well tolerated. Versus Arthritis says it has no major side-effects, though minor side effects include a feeling of fullness in the stomach, loose stools and skin rashes.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking a supplement if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition or take medication. "A good collagen product isn't necessarily the one with the most impressive marketing. It's one with transparent ingredients, appropriate dosing, reliable sourcing and honest claims," says Andy.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
