Why choose caffeine-free supplements?

People choose caffeine-free products because they're sensitive to caffeine, train in the evening, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or already get caffeine from coffee, tea and energy drinks. EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) says single doses of 100mg of caffeine may affect sleep duration and patterns, particularly close to bedtime.

EFSA's safe levels for healthy adults are single doses of up to 200mg and up to 400mg a day from all sources, or up to 200mg a day if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. A caffeine-free supplement is one less source to add up.

What is a caffeine-free pre-workout?

A caffeine-free (stim-free) pre-workout leaves out caffeine and other stimulants and is usually built around ingredients such as citrulline, beta-alanine or creatine instead. Compare the amount of each ingredient per full serving and the cost per serving.

"I believe stimulant-free pre-workouts deserve more attention, particularly for evening gym users, people sensitive to caffeine or those already consuming caffeine throughout the day," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ. Browse stim-free pre-workout.

How do you check a product is really caffeine-free?

Read the full ingredients list, not just the front of the pack. EFSA notes caffeine is found naturally in coffee and cocoa beans, tea leaves, guarana berries and kola nut, so ingredients such as guarana, kola nut, tea extracts or cocoa can add caffeine even when "caffeine" isn't listed by name.

Some products contain other stimulants instead: EFSA notes caffeine is sometimes combined with p-synephrine (a stimulant found in bitter orange) in weight-loss and sports supplements. Check the label each time, as flavours and versions can differ, and speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have a heart condition, are pregnant or take medication. Our guide to reading a supplement label can help.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
