Our honest take

A berry gummy for children aged 3 and over: two gummies give 1.5 billion Bacillus coagulans spores plus 2 g of soluble tapioca fibre. Spore-forming cultures survive in a gummy, which is the point of this format, but there are no authorised claims and very little evidence that healthy children need live cultures. Two gummies also contain 4 g of added sugar, so treat it as a sweet and brush teeth afterwards.

  • You want a chewable option for a child over 3 who will not swallow capsules
  • You prefer a product without artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners
  • You want the fibre and the culture in one gummy
  • Your child is under 3, has a weakened immune system or a medical condition, unless your GP agrees
  • You are trying to cut down your child's added sugar (4 g per serving)
  • You expect a noticeable effect in an otherwise healthy child
The science

Spore-forming cultures (Bacillus)· evidence: Insufficient

Bacillus coagulans (now also called Heyndrickxia or Weizmannia coagulans, sold as LactoSpore and other brands) and Bacillus subtilis form hard spores. That makes them stable in gummies, powders and capsules without refrigeration, which is their main practical advantage.

Human studies on these strains are few, mostly small and often funded by ingredient makers, with mixed results. There are no authorised health claims, so we make no claims about what they do.

Typical dose: Products typically provide 1 to 3 billion spores a day.

Safety: Generally well tolerated. Speak to your doctor first if you have a weakened immune system or are seriously ill.

Soluble fibre (resistant dextrin, guar fibre, XOS)· evidence: Limited

Resistant dextrin (Fibersol-2), partially hydrolysed guar gum (Sunfiber) and xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) are soluble fibres that dissolve without much taste or thickening, so they are easy to add to drinks. They count towards your daily fibre.

Studies on each are mostly small and funded by ingredient makers, with mixed results. There are no authorised health claims for these specific fibres, so we make no claims about what they do beyond adding fibre to your diet.

Most UK adults eat about 20 g of fibre a day against a target of 30 g. Oats, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit and wholegrains are the cheapest way to close that gap.

Typical dose: Typically 3 to 10 g a day; start low and build up.

Safety: Can cause wind and bloating at first. Drink plenty of fluid. Fibre can slow the absorption of some medicines, so take medicines at a different time of day and check with your pharmacist.
