At a glance
Insufficient
evidence for spore-forming cultures (bacillus)
Our honest take
A strawberry pectin gummy containing Bacillus subtilis, a spore-forming culture that stays stable in a gummy without refrigeration. Human evidence for this strain is thin and there are no authorised claims, so treat it as an easy-to-take extra rather than something you need. It is one of the cheapest ways into live cultures, but gummies contain sugar, and capsules from NOW or Jarrow give named, coded strains for similar money.
- You dislike swallowing capsules
- You want a gelatin-free, vegetarian gummy
- You want a low-cost way to try a live culture
- You have a weakened immune system or are seriously ill, unless your doctor agrees
- You are cutting down on sugar
- You want strains identified by strain code
The science
Spore-forming cultures (Bacillus)· evidence: Insufficient
Bacillus coagulans (now also called Heyndrickxia or Weizmannia coagulans, sold as LactoSpore and other brands) and Bacillus subtilis form hard spores. That makes them stable in gummies, powders and capsules without refrigeration, which is their main practical advantage.
Human studies on these strains are few, mostly small and often funded by ingredient makers, with mixed results. There are no authorised health claims, so we make no claims about what they do.
Typical dose: Products typically provide 1 to 3 billion spores a day.
Safety: Generally well tolerated. Speak to your doctor first if you have a weakened immune system or are seriously ill.
