Good to know
- Suitable for vegetarians
A food supplement, not a substitute for a varied diet and healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the stated dose. Keep out of reach of children.
At a glance
Limited
evidence for soluble fibre (resistant dextrin, guar fibre, xos)
Our honest take
A strawberry chewable tablet built on prebiotic fibre rather than live cultures: each tablet gives 1,000 mg of xylooligosaccharides (PreticX). That is a small amount compared with the 30 g of fibre a day UK adults are advised to eat, and there are no authorised claims for this fibre. It is convenient, but a bowl of oats, a portion of beans or an extra piece of fruit adds more fibre for less money.
- You want a chewable fibre tablet you can take without water
- You prefer a vegetarian, cultures-free option
- You could simply add more fibre-rich food to your diet
- You follow a low-FODMAP diet, unless your dietitian agrees
- You have ongoing bowel symptoms that your GP has not checked
The science
Soluble fibre (resistant dextrin, guar fibre, XOS)· evidence: Limited
Resistant dextrin (Fibersol-2), partially hydrolysed guar gum (Sunfiber) and xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) are soluble fibres that dissolve without much taste or thickening, so they are easy to add to drinks. They count towards your daily fibre.
Studies on each are mostly small and funded by ingredient makers, with mixed results. There are no authorised health claims for these specific fibres, so we make no claims about what they do beyond adding fibre to your diet.
Most UK adults eat about 20 g of fibre a day against a target of 30 g. Oats, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit and wholegrains are the cheapest way to close that gap.
Typical dose: Typically 3 to 10 g a day; start low and build up.
Safety: Can cause wind and bloating at first. Drink plenty of fluid. Fibre can slow the absorption of some medicines, so take medicines at a different time of day and check with your pharmacist.
