evidence for niacinamide (nicotinamide)

Our honest take

One capsule gives 500 mg of niacin as niacinamide (nicotinamide), which is 3,125% of the daily reference intake. That sits right at the UK safety guidance of 500 mg a day of nicotinamide from supplements, so do not stack it with a multivitamin or B-complex that also contains B3. Niacinamide does not cause the flushing of ordinary niacin. Most people get all the B3 they need from food, and there is no good evidence that oral niacinamide improves skin or energy in people who are not short of it. It is a sensible, clean formula (just nicotinamide, a plant capsule and inulin) if a professional has advised it.

  • A health professional has advised you to take nicotinamide
  • You want a non-flushing form of vitamin B3
  • You are hoping for clearer skin from a capsule: the evidence for oral niacinamide in healthy people is weak
  • You have liver disease or take epilepsy medicines: check with your GP
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding: check with your GP or midwife first
The science

Niacinamide (nicotinamide)· evidence: Limited

Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, is a form of vitamin B3. It works as a vitamin in the same way as nicotinic acid but does not cause the skin flushing that nicotinic acid does.

Most people get enough vitamin B3 from food. Nicotinamide at 500 mg twice a day has been studied in people with a history of certain skin cancers under specialist care, and it is used in skincare creams; these uses are medical or topical, and we make no claims about them for this supplement.

For people who are not short of B3, there is no good evidence that oral niacinamide supplements improve health, skin or energy.

Authorised health claim
Niacin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Niacin contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system. Niacin contributes to normal psychological function. Niacin contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes. Niacin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. Niacin contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 2.4 mg of niacin.)

Typical dose: Adults need about 13 to 17 mg of vitamin B3 a day (NRV: 16 mg). Supplements often give 250 to 500 mg.

Safety: The UK Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals considered up to 500 mg a day of nicotinamide from supplements unlikely to cause harm; EFSA's upper level is 900 mg a day for adults. High doses can cause nausea and, rarely, liver strain. Check with your GP if you have liver disease or take medicines for epilepsy.
