evidence for nicotinamide riboside (nr)
Our honest take
Nicotinamide riboside (NR), a form of vitamin B3, at 300 mg per 2-capsule daily dose, which is the maximum permitted in GB food supplements for adults. It is sold for 'healthy ageing' because it raises NAD+ levels; human trials confirm that, but have not shown clear benefits for energy, muscle or metabolism in healthy people, and most of the striking results are from animals. At about £1.80 a day this is one of the most expensive products in the range, so buy it only if you are comfortable paying for an unproven idea.
- You are an adult interested in NAD+ research and understand the human evidence is still early
- You want a recognised NR ingredient from a UK brand
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18: NR is not authorised for these groups
- You are looking for more energy: a varied diet, sleep and activity have far better evidence
- You are on a budget: ordinary vitamin B3 in a multivitamin costs pennies
The science
Nicotinamide riboside (NR)· evidence: Limited
Nicotinamide riboside (NR, sold as Niagen) is a form of vitamin B3 that the body uses to make NAD+, a molecule involved in energy production in cells. NAD+ levels fall with age, which has led to NR being marketed for "healthy ageing".
Human trials show NR reliably raises NAD+ levels in the blood. However, small trials in healthy adults have not shown clear improvements in muscle function, metabolism, energy or other health measures. Most of the exciting results come from animal studies.
As a source of vitamin B3, NR works, but so does a cheap multivitamin. At current prices you are paying a large premium for an effect on NAD+ that has not yet been shown to matter for health.
Typical dose: Studies have used 250 to 1,000 mg a day. GB/EU novel food authorisation allows up to 300 mg a day in food supplements for adults.
Safety: Generally well tolerated in studies of up to 2,000 mg a day for short periods; mild nausea, bloating or headache have been reported. Not authorised for use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or children. Long-term safety data are limited.
