Nutrend Fat Direct 2in1 Shot

Brands: Nutrend
Regular price£27.81

Two products in one 60ml bottle: a fat burner and a pre-workout, taken at the same moment they're both most useful.

The logic is sound. Training in a calorie deficit is when energy is lowest and when fat-loss support matters most, so combining the stimulant and the thermogenic side into a single pre-training shot saves you taking two things half an hour apart — and stops you doubling up on caffeine by accident.

Take one shot 20–30 minutes before training, on cutting days when the session needs rescuing. It is not a replacement for the diet doing the work.

Box of 20 × 60ml shots.

Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or anyone sensitive to caffeine. Do not exceed the stated dose, and avoid taking it close to bedtime.

Strong

evidence for caffeine

Our honest take

A ready-to-drink pre-training shot with a moderate 100 mg of caffeine (about a mug of coffee), 2 g of L-carnitine, 1.5 g of arginine and 1 g of beta-alanine. The caffeine is the only ingredient likely to make a noticeable difference to how a session feels; L-carnitine and arginine have little evidence for fat loss in healthy people, and 1 g of beta-alanine is well below the 3–6 g a day used in studies. At around £1.40 a shot it is a convenience buy: a coffee before training does most of the same job for much less.

  • You want a measured, moderate caffeine dose before training without mixing powders
  • You find high-stimulant pre-workouts too much and prefer around 100 mg of caffeine
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have a heart condition or high blood pressure
  • You are on a budget: a coffee gives similar caffeine for a fraction of the price
  • You avoid artificial colours: it contains E104, which may have an effect on activity and attention in children
The science

Caffeine· evidence: Strong

Caffeine is one of the best-supported performance aids, with consistent research showing it can improve endurance, strength and alertness. The doses used in research are usually 3–6 mg per kg of body weight, taken about an hour before exercise.

The catch is the dose: it adds to any coffee, tea or energy drinks you already have, and it can disrupt sleep if taken later in the day. There is no authorised health claim for caffeine and sports performance in the UK.

Typical dose: Research doses are 3–6 mg per kg of body weight

Safety: High caffeine content. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women. Healthy adults should keep total caffeine from all sources to no more than 400 mg a day and 200 mg at a time. Avoid late in the day and do not combine with other caffeine products.

L-carnitine (incl. L-carnitine L-tartrate)· evidence: Limited

L-carnitine helps carry fats into cells to be used for energy. Your body makes its own, and meat and dairy supply more, so healthy people eating a normal diet are not short of it. Taking extra does not appear to raise the amount in muscle much, which is one reason it does not act as a 'fat burner'.

Reviews of the trials report a small average drop in weight (around 1 kg) compared with placebo, mostly in older or overweight people, often alongside a diet. There is little evidence of a meaningful effect on fat loss in healthy, active people with a normal diet. Small studies of L-carnitine L-tartrate have looked at muscle soreness after exercise, with mixed results.

There is no authorised health claim for L-carnitine, so we make no claims about its effects. Fat loss comes from a sustained calorie deficit, not from this ingredient.

Typical dose: Studies have typically used 1–3 g a day; liquids and capsules usually give 0.5–3 g per serving

Safety: Usually well tolerated at up to about 2 g a day. Higher doses can cause stomach upset, diarrhoea and a 'fishy' body odour. Speak to your GP first if you take thyroid medication or warfarin, have kidney disease, or have had seizures. Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice.

Beta-alanine· evidence: Moderate

Beta-alanine raises carnosine levels in muscle, which helps buffer acid during hard effort. Reviews of the research find a small benefit in high-intensity efforts lasting roughly one to four minutes, such as hard intervals or rowing sprints. It does little for single heavy lifts or for long, steady exercise.

It works by building up over weeks, so it needs about 3–6 g a day for at least two to four weeks. Many combined products contain far less than that. There is no authorised health claim for beta-alanine.

Typical dose: 3.2–6.4 g a day, split into smaller doses, for at least 2–4 weeks

Safety: Commonly causes a harmless tingling or pins-and-needles feeling on the skin (paraesthesia), which is stronger with larger single doses.

Research we looked at:
Trexler ET et al. (2015). International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand: beta-alanine. J Int Soc Sports Nutr 12:30.

Choline· evidence: Insufficient

Choline is a nutrient the body uses to make cell membranes and the messenger acetylcholine, and to process fats in the liver. Eggs, meat, fish and dairy are good sources, and most people with a varied diet get enough.

Choline is added to 'cutting' products because of its role in normal fat metabolism, but there is no good evidence that extra choline causes fat loss in people who already get enough. The authorised claims below describe normal body functions, not weight loss.

Authorised health claim
Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism.

Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism.

Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function.

These claims only apply to a product that provides at least 82.5 mg of choline per 100 g, 100 ml or single portion.

Typical dose: EFSA's adequate intake for adults is 400 mg a day from all sources; supplements usually give 100–500 mg

Safety: Large doses (several grams a day) can cause a fishy body odour, sweating, stomach upset and low blood pressure. Products usually give far less.

Research we looked at:

How to use

Shake, then drink one shot 15–30 minutes before training. No more than one shot a day. Some sediment and a harmless tingling from the beta-alanine are normal.

Avoid within 6 hours of bed, and count the caffeine towards your daily total: healthy adults should have no more than 400 mg a day from all sources. Do not exceed the stated daily dose.
