Plain acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) from NOW, as capsules (1,000 mg per 2-capsule serving) or as a pure powder (about 1.24 g per half teaspoon). ALCAR is marketed for energy and brain health, but there is not enough good evidence that it helps healthy people who eat a normal diet, and it is not a fat burner. If you want to try it, the powder is much better value per dose than the small 50-capsule tub, though it tastes sharp.

Acetyl-L-carnitine· evidence: Insufficient

Acetyl-L-carnitine is a form of carnitine, which the body makes itself and which helps move fat into cells to be used for energy. It is marketed for energy and brain health. There is not enough good evidence that taking it improves exercise performance or energy in healthy people who eat a normal diet.

There is no authorised health claim for it, so we make no claims about its effects.

Typical dose: Products usually provide 0.5–2 g a day

Safety: Can cause stomach upset in some people. Speak to your GP first if you take thyroid medication or blood thinners.

Ingredients & nutrition

Capsules, per daily dose (2 capsules): acetyl-L-carnitine 1,000 mg (from 1,205 mg acetyl-L-carnitine HCl). Other ingredients: capsule (hypromellose), rice flour, stearic acid (vegetable source), silicon dioxide. 50 capsules = 25 daily doses.

Pure powder, per daily dose (1/2 level teaspoon, about 1.5 g): acetyl-L-carnitine 1,240 mg (from 1,500 mg acetyl-L-carnitine HCl). No other ingredients. 85 g = about 57 daily doses.

Allergens: made without wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts or sesame, in a facility that handles them. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

How to use

Capsules: take 2 capsules a day. Powder: take 1/2 level teaspoon a day mixed into water or juice. NOW allows up to twice this amount, but we count one serving as the daily dose. For adults only. Do not exceed the stated daily dose.
