Insufficient
evidence for acetyl-l-carnitine
Our honest take
A 500 mg acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) capsule. The label suggests 2 capsules twice a day, which is 2,000 mg and means a 100-capsule pot lasts only 25 days, at about 95p a day. There is not enough good evidence that ALCAR helps healthy people who eat a normal diet, and it is not a fat burner. If you want to try it, a lower dose of a plain ALCAR such as Jarrow's costs a fraction of this.
- You want a vegetarian ALCAR capsule from a long-established brand
- You are happy to take a lower dose than the label suggests to make the pot last
- You are buying it for fat loss: the evidence does not support that
- You take thyroid medication or blood thinners, unless your GP agrees
- You want value: at the label dose a pot lasts under a month
The science
Acetyl-L-carnitine· evidence: Insufficient
Acetyl-L-carnitine is a form of carnitine, which the body makes itself and which helps move fat into cells to be used for energy. It is marketed for energy and brain health. There is not enough good evidence that taking it improves exercise performance or energy in healthy people who eat a normal diet.
There is no authorised health claim for it, so we make no claims about its effects.
Typical dose: Products usually provide 0.5–2 g a day
Safety: Can cause stomach upset in some people. Speak to your GP first if you take thyroid medication or blood thinners.
