Our honest take

Each capsule combines 320 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine arginate with 300 mg of standard acetyl-L-carnitine, taken three times a day. The arginate form is promoted for brain health, but the research behind it is mostly in animals and cells, and there is not enough good evidence that ALCAR in any form helps healthy people. It costs about 93p a day, roughly three times the price of a plain ALCAR capsule, which we think is hard to justify.

Acetyl-L-carnitine is a form of carnitine, which the body makes itself and which helps move fat into cells to be used for energy. It is marketed for energy and brain health. There is not enough good evidence that taking it improves exercise performance or energy in healthy people who eat a normal diet.
