Our honest take
Two capsules give 1,260 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR), providing 845 mg of L-carnitine, plus 5 mg of zinc (50% NRV); a pot lasts 30 days. That ALCAR amount is in the lower part of the range used in studies. There is not enough good evidence that ALCAR helps healthy people who eat a normal diet, it is not a fat burner, and only the zinc has authorised claims. It is caffeine-free. The capsule shell is gelatine.
- You want an ALCAR capsule from a sports nutrition brand
- You prefer capsules to measuring a powder
- You are buying it for fat loss: the evidence does not support that
- You already take zinc: check the label so your total from supplements stays under the FSA's 25 mg a day
- You take thyroid medication or blood thinners, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your GP agrees
The science
Acetyl-L-carnitine· evidence: Insufficient
Acetyl-L-carnitine is a form of carnitine, which the body makes itself and which helps move fat into cells to be used for energy. It is marketed for energy and brain health. There is not enough good evidence that taking it improves exercise performance or energy in healthy people who eat a normal diet.
There is no authorised health claim for it, so we make no claims about its effects.
Typical dose: Products usually provide 0.5–2 g a day
Safety: Can cause stomach upset in some people. Speak to your GP first if you take thyroid medication or blood thinners.
Zinc· evidence: Moderate
Zinc is a trace mineral needed for the immune system, skin, wound healing and many enzymes. Men need about 9.5 mg a day and women 7 mg in the UK, mostly from meat, shellfish, dairy, bread and cereals. Vegans and vegetarians can fall short because plant foods contain phytates that reduce absorption.
Supplements help people whose intake is low. Zinc lozenges taken at the very start of a cold have been studied with mixed results; tablets swallowed every day by well-fed people are not shown to add much.
Long-term high doses cause problems, mainly by blocking copper absorption, so more is not better.
Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. Zinc contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 1.5 mg.)
Typical dose: Adults need about 7 mg (women) to 9.5 mg (men) a day from all sources (NRV on labels: 10 mg). Supplements usually give 5 to 25 mg.
Safety: The NHS advises not taking more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor advises it. Long-term high doses can cause copper deficiency, anaemia and weakened immunity. Zinc can upset the stomach if taken without food, and it reduces absorption of some antibiotics.
