Vegetarian Supplements

Compare vegetarian supplements on what's in each daily dose, the form of each nutrient and the cost per day. A vegetarian filter is a starting point: check each product's label, especially capsules, gummies and oils, before you buy.

What makes a supplement vegetarian?

A vegetarian supplement contains no meat or fish and no ingredients made from them, such as gelatine or fish oil. It can still contain ingredients from animals that aren't slaughtered, such as milk or egg, so a vegetarian product isn't necessarily vegan.

Capsule shells and gummies are where gelatine most often appears, and omega-3 products are often made from fish. If you want a product with no animal ingredients at all, browse vegan supplements.

Is everything in this collection suitable for vegetarians?

Products appear here because they are listed as suitable for vegetarians, but the filter is a starting point. Check the label or the manufacturer's statement for the exact product and flavour, and look for a recognised vegetarian or vegan logo if that matters to you. Recipes can change, so check again when you reorder.

Which nutrients should vegetarians think about?

The NHS says vitamin B12 is only found naturally in animal products, and that vegetarians are more likely to have lower iron stores than people who eat meat, partly because iron from plants is not as easy for the body to absorb.

That doesn't mean you need a supplement. If you do take iron, the NHS says 17mg or less a day of iron supplements is unlikely to cause any harm, and to take more only if your GP has advised it. Browse vitamin B12 and iron, and speak to your GP or pharmacist if you're pregnant, have a medical condition or take medication.

How do you compare vegetarian supplements?

Compare the amount of each nutrient per daily dose and the cost per day, then check the form and the capsule or gummy base.

"Two products that look almost identical on the shelf can offer different value," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ. Our guide to reading a supplement label shows where to find the amounts, and our guide to what supplements you actually need is a good place to start if you're unsure.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
