Our honest take

Creatine hydrochloride with a tiny 750 mg serving. The brand suggests that is enough, but there is no good evidence that a small dose of HCl matches the 3 g a day of creatine the authorised claim is based on. To reach 3 g you would need four servings a day, which makes this many times more expensive than monohydrate. It is Informed Sport certified.

  • Monohydrate genuinely upsets your stomach
  • You compete in tested sport and want Informed Sport certification
  • You want an evidence-based dose at a fair price: plain monohydrate
  • You expect 750 mg to do the job of 3–5 g
The science

Creatine hydrochloride· evidence: Limited

Creatine HCl is creatine bound to hydrochloric acid. It dissolves in water more easily than monohydrate, and it is often marketed as needing a smaller dose or causing less bloating. The few studies that compare it directly with monohydrate have not shown it to work better, and there is no good evidence that a smaller dose of HCl matches a normal dose of monohydrate.

It still provides creatine, so the authorised creatine claim applies when you get 3 g of creatine a day. Because it usually costs more per gram, we see it as an option mainly if monohydrate genuinely disagrees with you.

Authorised health claim
Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine.

Typical dose: Enough to provide 3 g of creatine a day; check the label

Safety: Same general precautions as creatine monohydrate. Speak to your GP first if you have a kidney condition.
