Compare muscle and joint products on the ingredients and amounts per daily dose, such as collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM or shark cartilage, and the cost per day. The evidence for most joint supplements is limited, and we're clear about that below.

Clear allWhat's in muscle and joint supplements?
This collection includes collagen powders and drinks, glucosamine and chondroitin formulas, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane, a sulphur compound), shark cartilage, boswellia, and topical products such as a magnesium spray and a muscle cream.
None of these ingredients has an authorised health claim for joints or muscle recovery on the GB authorised claims list. Some multi-ingredient formulas add vitamins or minerals that do have claims; check the label for which ones and how much.
Do glucosamine and chondroitin work?
The evidence is weak. The NHS says GPs no longer prescribe chondroitin and glucosamine on the NHS because there's no strong evidence that they're effective, and NICE, which advises the NHS on care standards, recommends they shouldn't routinely be offered.
The NHS also says exercise is one of the most important treatments for osteoarthritis. If you have ongoing joint pain, see your GP. Glucosamine is often made from shellfish, so check the label if you have an allergy, and speak to a pharmacist if you take medication.
Are there supplements for muscle recovery?
No supplement has an authorised muscle-recovery claim. The closest is protein: "Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass", for foods that are at least a source of protein (GB claims list).
See our protein range, or compare collagen products on the grams of collagen per serving and cost per day.
We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
