Herbal Supplements

Compare herbal supplements on the amount of extract per daily dose, how the extract is standardised and the cost per day. No herbal ingredient has an authorised health claim in Great Britain, and herbs can interact with medicines, so check the safety notes before you buy.

Are herbal supplements safe?

They aren't safe for everyone. The NHS says you should not take herbal medicines if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney or liver problems, or take certain medicines, and that herbal products are not recommended for children because not enough is known about their safety.

The NHS lists statins, antidepressants, diabetes medicines such as metformin, blood pressure medicines, blood thinners such as warfarin and hormonal contraception among medicines that don't mix well with herbal products. If you take any medication, check with a pharmacist first.

Do herbal supplements work?

For most herbs the evidence is limited, and none has an authorised health claim in Great Britain. Health claims for plant substances were put on hold by the European Commission, and only authorised claims in the GB register may be used.

For menopause products such as black cohosh, the NHS says there is very little evidence to show how well they work, or how safe they are. "Where evidence is limited or inconclusive, we should say so openly," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ.

What's in this collection?

This collection includes turmeric and curcumin, ashwagandha, boswellia, maca, fenugreek, shatavari, dong quai, black cohosh, chasteberry, horsetail and guarana, plus herbal blends for women's health. Guarana contains caffeine, so count it in your daily caffeine total.

Compare the amount of extract per daily dose and whether it's standardised (tested to contain a set amount of a named compound). A herbal product sold as a medicine in the UK carries a THR (traditional herbal registration) mark; food supplements don't. Our guide to reading a supplement label explains what to look for.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
