evidence for curcumin (turmeric extract)

Our honest take

A plain turmeric extract standardised to 95% curcuminoids: one capsule gives 475 mg, which is a lot of curcumin for the money. It has no absorption enhancer, so much of it passes through unabsorbed, and the evidence for curcumin is limited with no authorised claims. One capsule a day already exceeds EFSA's acceptable daily intake for curcumin as a food colour (about 210 mg for a 70 kg adult), so there is no reason to take the label's maximum of three.

  • You want a simple, standardised curcumin extract without extra ingredients
  • You want the most curcuminoids per penny
  • You need a product free from soy, gluten and dairy
  • You take blood thinners or other regular medication, or have gallstones or liver problems, unless your GP agrees
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You want a form designed for better absorption (look at the phytosome options)
The science

Curcumin (turmeric extract)· evidence: Limited

Curcumin is the yellow pigment in turmeric root. On its own it is poorly absorbed, which is why many products use extracts standardised to 95% curcuminoids or 'enhanced absorption' forms such as phytosome (Meriva), Longvida or NovaSOL.

Many studies have looked at curcumin, but most are small and short, and results are mixed. Absorption claims for branded forms come mainly from blood-level studies, not from proof of a different effect in the body.

There are no authorised health claims for turmeric or curcumin in Great Britain, so we make no claims about what it does. Using turmeric in cooking is fine; most people do not need a supplement.

Typical dose: Products typically give 80 to 1,000 mg of curcuminoids a day depending on the form. EFSA's acceptable daily intake for curcumin as a food colour is 3 mg per kg of body weight (about 210 mg for a 70 kg adult).

Safety: Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with turmeric and curcumin supplements, particularly high-absorption forms. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine or tummy pain. Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take blood thinners or other regular medication, have gallstones or liver disease, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Ingredients & nutrition

Ingredients: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome extract standardised to 95% curcuminoids, capsule (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, water), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (vegetable source), silicon dioxide.

Per daily dose (1 capsule): turmeric extract 500 mg, providing 475 mg curcuminoids. 60 capsules = 60 daily doses; 120 capsules = 120 daily doses.

Allergens and diet: Free from wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, egg, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts and sesame. Vegetarian capsule.

Always check the pack you receive, as manufacturers sometimes update recipes.

How to use

Take 1 capsule a day with food. The US label allows up to 3 a day, but one capsule already provides more curcumin than EFSA's acceptable daily intake, so we suggest sticking to one. Adults only. Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take medication, have gallstones or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not exceed the stated daily dose.
