People shopping for stress supplements usually look at ashwagandha, L-theanine and magnesium. We explain what's in them and what can and can't be said about them. Supplements aren't a substitute for support, and the NHS self-help steps and talking to someone come first.

Clear allWhat helps with stress?
The NHS's stress tips include being active, connecting with people, taking time for yourself, and not relying on alcohol, smoking or caffeine to cope. It says exercise won't make stress disappear but can reduce some of the emotional intensity you're feeling.
See a GP if you're struggling to cope or self-help isn't working; adults can also refer themselves to NHS talking therapies. If you need someone to talk to, Samaritans are available on 116 123, and call 999 in an emergency.
Does ashwagandha work for stress?
Ashwagandha has no authorised health claim, so we don't claim it relieves stress. The Food Standards Agency has reviewed evidence on its safety and says a risk assessment will then be conducted and the outcome published.
Until then, speak to a GP or pharmacist before taking ashwagandha if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a health condition or take medication. L-theanine, an amino acid, also has no authorised health claim. Browse ashwagandha.
Are there any authorised claims for stress?
No. The closest is "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function", where a product is at least a source of magnesium; the same claim is authorised for several other nutrients, including niacin, folate and biotin (GB register of authorised health claims). It describes normal function, not stress relief. Browse magnesium.
We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
