Our honest take
Peruvian maca root extract (5:1): two capsules give 1,000 mg, so each capsule is 500 mg. Maca is a root vegetable eaten as food in the Andes; a few small trials have looked at energy and libido with inconsistent results, and there are no authorised claims, so we make no claims about what it does. At two a day the 60-capsule pack lasts a month, so if you want to try it, the 120 pack is the better buy.
- You want maca in capsule form rather than as a powder
- You need a vegan product at a low price
- You have a thyroid condition (maca is a brassica), unless your GP agrees
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a hormone-sensitive condition
- You expect a noticeable effect: the evidence is weak
The science
Maca· evidence: Insufficient
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable from the high Andes, eaten as food in Peru and sold as a powder or extract. It is mainly marketed for energy, libido and mood.
A handful of small trials have looked at these areas, with some positive but inconsistent findings, and reviews describe the evidence as limited. There are no authorised health claims for maca, so we make no claims about what it does.
Typical dose: Studies have mostly used 1.5 to 3 g a day of root powder.
Safety: Generally well tolerated as a food. Maca is a brassica and contains goitrogens, so speak to your GP first if you have a thyroid condition. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, as there is little safety data.
