Our honest take
Standardised fenugreek seed extract, 550 mg per vegan capsule. Fenugreek is sold for several purposes, from men's vitality to breastfeeding, but the studies are small and inconsistent and there are no authorised claims, so we make no claims about what it does. It is inexpensive, but as a legume it can trigger allergies and it may lower blood sugar.
- You want a standardised fenugreek extract in a vegan capsule
- You have no legume allergy and take no diabetes medicines
- You are allergic to peanuts, chickpeas or other legumes
- You take diabetes medicines or blood thinners without checking with your GP
- You are pregnant (if breastfeeding, speak to your midwife or GP first)
The science
Fenugreek· evidence: Insufficient
Fenugreek is a legume whose seeds are used as a spice. Seed extracts are sold to men for testosterone and to breastfeeding mothers, among other uses. Studies are small, often funded by extract makers, and use different extracts, so results are hard to compare and inconsistent.
There are no authorised health claims for fenugreek, so we make no claims about what it does.
Typical dose: Extract studies have mostly used 500 to 600 mg a day.
Safety: Fenugreek is a legume and can cause allergic reactions, especially in people allergic to peanuts or chickpeas. It may lower blood sugar, so speak to your GP first if you take diabetes medicines, and it may add to the effect of blood thinners. Avoid in pregnancy. It can cause wind, loose stools and a maple-syrup smell in sweat and urine.
