Our honest take
Plain bovine colostrum powder standardised for immunoglobulin G, at 1,200 mg per serving, so a 100 g tub gives roughly 83 servings at about 29p each. Studies in athletes have mostly used far more, around 10 to 20 g a day, and even then results are mixed; there are no authorised claims, so we make no claims about immunity. It is good value as colostrum goes, but most people do not need it.
- You want a plain, IgG-standardised colostrum powder at a low cost per serving
- You are happy to stir a powder into a cold drink
- You have a milk allergy or are vegan
- You are a tested athlete and need a batch-tested product (colostrum naturally contains growth factors)
- You expect the effects seen at the much larger doses used in studies
The science
Bovine colostrum· evidence: Limited
Colostrum is the first milk a cow produces after calving. It is rich in antibodies (immunoglobulin G, IgG), growth factors and lactoferrin, and supplements are often standardised to their IgG content.
Studies have mostly been in athletes during heavy training, looking at self-reported upper-respiratory symptoms and gut measures. Some results are positive, but trials are small and doses vary. There are no authorised health claims for colostrum, so we make no claims about what it does.
Typical dose: Studies in athletes have used roughly 10 to 20 g a day; most supplements give 1 to 3 g.
Safety: Contains milk: not suitable if you have a milk allergy, and may not suit people with lactose intolerance. Not suitable for vegans. Sports users should choose batch-tested products, as colostrum naturally contains growth factors such as IGF-1 that WADA has flagged.
