Our honest take
A single-ingredient joint capsule: 2 capsules give 820 mg of Colartix, a hydrolysed bovine cartilage collagen that naturally contains peptides and chondroitin, and the label allows up to 4 a day. Collagen and chondroitin have some small studies behind them with mixed results, there are no authorised health claims, and we make no claims about joint conditions. At about 95p a day for the standard dose it is one of the more expensive joint products we sell. Not suitable for vegetarians.
- You want to try a cartilage-collagen supplement with a simple, clean label
- You prefer a small daily capsule to a collagen powder
- You are vegetarian or vegan: the collagen is bovine
- You want value: collagen powders and glucosamine cost much less per day
- You take medicines, without checking with your doctor (the brand's advice)
The science
Collagen protein· evidence: Limited
Collagen protein is made from animal skin, bones or fish scales. It counts as protein on a label, but it is an incomplete protein: it is missing tryptophan and is low in leucine. That makes it a poor choice if your main aim is building muscle.
For muscle, a complete protein such as whey, milk, egg, soy or a plant blend is a better use of your money.
Typical dose: Varies by product
Safety: Made from animal or fish sources. Check the label for fish or other allergens.
Research we looked at:
Morton RW et al. (2018). A systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of the effect of protein supplementation on resistance training-induced gains in muscle mass and strength in healthy adults. Br J Sports Med 52:376–384.
Jäger R et al. (2017). International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand: protein and exercise. J Int Soc Sports Nutr 14:20.
GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register: authorised claims for protein.
Chondroitin· evidence: Limited
Chondroitin sulphate is another natural part of cartilage. In supplements it usually comes from cow, pig, chicken or shark cartilage, and a few vegan versions are made by fermentation. It is often paired with glucosamine.
The research is mixed. Large independent trials found little or no benefit over a dummy pill for most people, while some smaller and maker-funded trials looked more positive, and the quality of chondroitin in supplements varies. EFSA rejected a claim that it helps keep joints healthy, and NICE does not recommend it on the NHS.
There is no authorised health claim for chondroitin, so we make no claims about what it does. Studies have mostly used 800–1,200 mg a day; many combination products contain far less.
Typical dose: Studies mostly used 800–1,200 mg a day
Safety: Usually made from animal cartilage, so not suitable for vegetarians unless stated. May add to the effect of warfarin and other blood thinners: speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take them. Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice.
