evidence for greens and superfood powder blends

Our honest take

A flavoured greens powder with fruit, vegetable and green powders including spinach, spirulina and chlorella, plus fibre, calcium and digestive enzymes; 30 scoops a tub, about 83p each. It is an easy drink, but the amount of each green in a scoop is small, it does not replace fruit and vegetables, and the blend itself has no authorised claims. Treat it as a convenience, not a nutritional shortcut.

  • You like a flavoured daily drink and already eat reasonably well
  • You want something easy to take while travelling
  • You take warfarin (greens can be high in vitamin K), unless your GP agrees
  • You are allergic to milk, soya or egg (may contain traces)
  • You are hoping it will replace your 5 A Day
The science

Greens and superfood powder blends· evidence: Insufficient

Greens powders combine dried vegetables, grasses, algae such as spirulina and chlorella, fruit powders, fibre and sometimes enzymes or cultures. Each ingredient is usually present in small amounts, often inside a blend that does not show individual doses.

There is no good evidence that greens powders do what eating fruit and vegetables does, and they do not count as a portion of your 5 A Day in the same way. There are no authorised claims for the blends themselves; any claim on a specific product comes from added vitamins or minerals at a high enough dose.

Typical dose: One scoop a day, usually 5 to 10 g.

Safety: Some contain vitamin K-rich greens, so speak to your GP first if you take warfarin. Check for added caffeine, sweeteners and allergens. Algae ingredients should be tested for contaminants. Not a replacement for fruit and vegetables.

Research we looked at:
NHS. 5 A Day: what counts? nhs.uk (Live Well).
Public Health England (2016). The Eatwell Guide.

Spirulina· evidence: Insufficient

Spirulina is a dried blue-green microalga. It contains protein, some vitamins, minerals and pigments, but at the few grams a day people take, it contributes only small amounts of these.

Studies on health effects are mostly small and mixed. There are no authorised health claims for spirulina itself, so we make no claims about what it does. Its vitamin B12 is largely in a form the body cannot use, so it is not a reliable B12 source for vegans.

Typical dose: Typically 1 to 5 g a day.

Safety: Choose products tested for contaminants: blue-green algae can be contaminated with toxins (microcystins) and heavy metals. Avoid if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), an autoimmune condition or take immune-suppressing medicines. Not recommended in pregnancy, breastfeeding or for children without advice.
