evidence for spirulina
Our honest take
Plain spirulina tablets in 500 mg or double-strength 1,000 mg sizes. At the few grams a day people take, spirulina adds only small amounts of protein and nutrients, its B12 is mostly a form the body cannot use, and there are no authorised claims for it. It is cheap, and NOW tests its algae for contaminants, but a portion of green vegetables does more for your diet.
- You want plain spirulina without the taste of the powder
- You want a low-cost vegan product from a brand that tests for contaminants
- You have phenylketonuria (PKU), an autoimmune condition or take immune-suppressing medicines
- You are vegan and relying on it for vitamin B12 (it is not a reliable source)
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or buying for a child
The science
Spirulina· evidence: Insufficient
Spirulina is a dried blue-green microalga. It contains protein, some vitamins, minerals and pigments, but at the few grams a day people take, it contributes only small amounts of these.
Studies on health effects are mostly small and mixed. There are no authorised health claims for spirulina itself, so we make no claims about what it does. Its vitamin B12 is largely in a form the body cannot use, so it is not a reliable B12 source for vegans.
Typical dose: Typically 1 to 5 g a day.
Safety: Choose products tested for contaminants: blue-green algae can be contaminated with toxins (microcystins) and heavy metals. Avoid if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), an autoimmune condition or take immune-suppressing medicines. Not recommended in pregnancy, breastfeeding or for children without advice.
