Our honest take
Two tablets give 900 mg of cranberry extract (38 mg proanthocyanidins, the compounds most studied), 200 mg nettle leaf extract and 80 mg vitamin C (100% NRV). The PAC amount is in the range some studies have used, but results for urinary health are mixed and there are no authorised claims for cranberry, so we make no claims about urinary infections. Only the vitamin C has authorised claims. If you have pain or burning when weeing, see a pharmacist or GP; if you take warfarin, check with them before using cranberry.
- You want cranberry in tablet form without the sugar of cranberry juice
- You take no blood-thinning medicines
- You take warfarin or other blood thinners
- You have symptoms of an infection right now: see a pharmacist or GP
- You have a history of kidney stones, unless your GP agrees
The science
Cranberry extract· evidence: Limited
Cranberry extracts are usually standardised to proanthocyanidins (PACs). Most of the research has looked at urinary health in specific groups of women, children and people in care settings. A 2023 Cochrane review found some positive results in certain groups, but products, doses and study quality vary a lot, and the findings do not apply to everyone.
There are no authorised health claims for cranberry, so we make no claims about what it does. If you have symptoms such as pain or burning when weeing, see a pharmacist or GP: supplements are not a substitute for treatment.
Typical dose: Varies widely; studies often used products giving about 36 mg of PACs a day.
Safety: Speak to your GP or pharmacist before use if you take warfarin (cranberry has been linked to changes in its effect). People with a history of kidney stones should check with their GP. Usually safe in food amounts in pregnancy, but check before taking a supplement.
