How to use
Use as directed on the pack. Joint formulas are normally taken daily over a longer run rather than as a one-off.
Contains shellfish-derived glucosamine unless the pack states otherwise — check before use if you have a shellfish allergy.

Our honest take
Four capsules give only 605 mg of glucosamine and 400 mg of chondroitin, well under the 1,500 mg and 800–1,200 mg used in studies, padded out with calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. A pot lasts just 15 days, so you pay about 63p a day for low doses. NOW's Extra Strength gives full doses of both for about the same per day, and Doctor's Best Glucosamine gives a full glucosamine dose for about a third of the price.
- You want calcium, magnesium and manganese alongside a small amount of glucosamine
- You are allergic to shellfish or molluscs
- You take warfarin or another blood thinner
- You want studied doses at a fair price: other products give more for the same or less
The science
Glucosamine· evidence: Limited
Glucosamine is a building block of cartilage. In supplements it comes as glucosamine sulphate or glucosamine hydrochloride, usually made from crab and shrimp shells, or from fermented corn in vegan versions. N-acetyl glucosamine is a related form with even less research behind it.
It has been studied a lot, and the results are disappointing. Large independent trials, such as the US GAIT trial, and a big review of the research found little or no difference from a dummy pill for most people. Some earlier trials using one branded glucosamine sulphate looked better, but many of those were funded by the maker. NICE does not recommend glucosamine on the NHS, and EFSA rejected a claim that it helps keep joints healthy.
There is no authorised health claim for glucosamine, so we make no claims about what it does. If you want to try it, the dose used in studies is 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulphate a day, and it is fair to stop after about three months if you notice no difference.
Typical dose: Studies used 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulphate a day
Safety: Most glucosamine is made from shellfish: avoid unless the label says it is from a non-shellfish source if you have a shellfish allergy. Glucosamine may strengthen the effect of warfarin, so speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take warfarin or another blood thinner. Speak to your GP first if you have diabetes, asthma or glaucoma, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Can cause mild stomach upset.

Chondroitin· evidence: Limited
Chondroitin sulphate is another natural part of cartilage. In supplements it usually comes from cow, pig, chicken or shark cartilage, and a few vegan versions are made by fermentation. It is often paired with glucosamine.
The research is mixed. Large independent trials found little or no benefit over a dummy pill for most people, while some smaller and maker-funded trials looked more positive, and the quality of chondroitin in supplements varies. EFSA rejected a claim that it helps keep joints healthy, and NICE does not recommend it on the NHS.
There is no authorised health claim for chondroitin, so we make no claims about what it does. Studies have mostly used 800–1,200 mg a day; many combination products contain far less.
Typical dose: Studies mostly used 800–1,200 mg a day
Safety: Usually made from animal cartilage, so not suitable for vegetarians unless stated. May add to the effect of warfarin and other blood thinners: speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take them. Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice.

Calcium· evidence: Moderate
Calcium is the main mineral in bones and teeth and is also needed for muscles, nerves and blood clotting. Adults need about 700 mg a day in the UK, which most people get from dairy, fortified plant milks, tofu, bread made with fortified flour and green vegetables.
Calcium supplements help people whose diets are genuinely low, for example some vegans or people who avoid dairy, and are sometimes prescribed with vitamin D for people with osteoporosis. For well-fed adults, reviews have found that extra calcium makes little difference to fracture risk.
Food is the preferred source. Different forms (carbonate, citrate) give different amounts of elemental calcium; citrate is easier to absorb without food.
Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal teeth. Calcium contributes to normal muscle function. Calcium contributes to normal blood clotting. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 120 mg.)
Typical dose: Adults need 700 mg a day from all sources (NRV on labels: 800 mg). Supplements usually give 200 to 1,000 mg.
Safety: The FSA advises that 1,500 mg a day or less from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. High doses can cause constipation and wind. Calcium reduces absorption of some medicines (such as thyroxine, some antibiotics and bisphosphonates) and iron, so take them at different times and check with a pharmacist. People with a history of kidney stones or high blood calcium should speak to their GP.

Manganese· evidence: Moderate
Manganese is a trace mineral the body needs in small amounts for enzymes involved in forming bone and connective tissue and in energy release. Tea, wholegrains, nuts, pulses and green vegetables are good sources, and deficiency is very rare in the UK.
It is often added to joint formulas because of its role in connective tissue. That role is real, but there is no evidence that extra manganese helps people who already get enough from food, which is almost everyone.
Manganese contributes to the normal formation of connective tissue. Manganese contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. Manganese contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Manganese contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 0.3 mg.)
Typical dose: NRV on labels: 2 mg. Supplements usually give 1–5 mg
Safety: The UK Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals advised that 4 mg a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm in adults, but only 0.5 mg a day for older people, because high intakes may affect the nervous system. Check the total across all your supplements.
