Compare protein cookies and protein desserts on protein per serving, calories, sugar and the cost per 20g of protein. They're a sweeter way to add protein, but cookies in particular can carry a lot of calories for each gram of protein, so the label is worth a closer look.

Clear allHow much protein is in a protein cookie?
Check the grams of protein per cookie or per pot on the nutrition panel, and compare it with the calories. In UK law a food can only be called "high protein" if at least 20% of its energy comes from protein; protein gives 4 kcal per gram.
For example (example figures, not a real product), a 220 kcal cookie with 12g of protein gets 48 kcal, or about 22%, of its energy from protein. A 150 kcal pudding with 20g gets 53%. Right now this collection has a protein cookie, a protein pudding and a protein cookie dough dessert; we don't currently stock protein brownies.
Are protein cookies healthy?
They're still biscuits and desserts, so check sugar, saturated fat and calories as well as protein. The NHS says a food is high in sugar above 22.5g per 100g and high in saturated fat above 5g per 100g.
Lower-sugar versions often use sweeteners or polyols. The NHS says polyols such as sorbitol and xylitol can have a laxative effect in large amounts. Check the allergens in bold: milk, egg, gluten and nuts are common.
How do you compare protein cookies on value?
Divide the price per serving by its grams of protein, then multiply by 20 to get the cost per 20g of protein.
How to compare value (example figures, not real products): a £2.40 cookie with 12g of protein costs £4.00 per 20g. A £1.80 pudding with 20g of protein costs £1.80 per 20g, less than half as much for the same protein. Compare with protein bars.
