Beef Protein Isolate

Compare beef protein isolate on the protein per serving, the format (powder, clear drink or ready-to-drink can), the allergens and the cost per 25g of protein. Beef protein is a dairy-free alternative to whey, but it isn't the same as eating beef, and research comparing it with whey is limited, so we show you what to check.

What is beef protein isolate?

Beef protein isolate is protein extracted from beef and processed into a powder with most of the fat and carbohydrate removed. Many products are "hydrolysed", meaning the protein has been partly broken down into smaller pieces during processing.

This collection includes beef protein powders, a clear hydrolysed beef protein that mixes into a juice-like drink, and ready-to-drink cans. Check the label for the protein per serving and the full ingredients list, as flavourings and sweeteners vary.

Is beef protein as good as whey?

The small amount of research that exists suggests similar results to whey in the studies done so far. In one 8-week study of 41 men and women doing resistance training, groups taking beef protein isolate, hydrolysed chicken protein or whey protein concentrate all gained lean mass, and strength rose in every group with no differences between them.

That's one small study, so it can't settle the question. The ISSN lists beef alongside egg, whey, casein and soy as intact (whole) protein supplements that can produce an anabolic response, the term researchers use for the body's muscle-building process. "Where evidence is limited or inconclusive, we should say so openly," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ.

Is beef protein dairy-free?

Beef protein itself contains no milk, which is why people who avoid dairy choose it. Milk is one of the 14 allergens that must be emphasised in the ingredients list, so check that list and any "may contain" warning on the exact product.

The NHS lists cows' milk among the most common allergic foods. If you have a diagnosed allergy, read the label every time, as recipes can change. Browse our dairy-free range for other options.

Beef protein vs whey: which should you choose?

Whey has the widest choice and research base; beef is the option people look at when they avoid dairy or don't get on with whey. Both are animal proteins and carry the same authorised protein claims.

Is beef protein powder the same as eating beef?

No. Beef protein powder is a processed protein ingredient, so it doesn't give you the same mix of nutrients as a piece of beef. It also isn't a direct swap for meat in your diet.

Its amino acid profile depends on how it's made, so look for an amino acid table on the label if that matters to you. The ISSN suggests each protein dose should contain 700 to 3,000mg of leucine (an amino acid), and it's worth checking whether a product discloses that.

What does protein do?

The authorised claims are that "protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass", "protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass" and "protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones", for foods that are at least a source of protein. Beef protein carries the same claims as any other protein, no more.

The British Dietetic Association says people in strength and endurance sports need around 1.4 to 2.0g of protein per kilogram a day, and that a healthy, balanced diet should usually provide enough. A powder is a convenient top-up.

How do you compare beef protein on value?

Compare the cost per 25g of protein. Beef protein often costs more per gram of protein than whey, and cans cost more again for the convenience.

How to compare value (example figures, not real products): a £35 tub of 1.8kg at 90% protein contains 1,620g of protein, or 64.8 portions of 25g, about 54p per 25g. A pack of 12 cans at £30, each with 25g of protein, costs £2.50 per 25g, nearly five times as much for the same protein.

"Concentrate, isolate and blends are marketed differently, and customers can end up paying considerably more without fully understanding what they're getting. A well-known brand isn't necessarily the best-value option, and a cheaper tub isn't necessarily the most economical," says Andy. Our guide to reading a supplement label shows where to find the figures, and our protein powder hub compares every type.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
