At a glance
Insufficient
evidence for sodium butyrate
Our honest take
Sodium butyrate at 500 mg per capsule, in enteric-coated micropellets designed to release it gradually along the gut. Butyrate is made naturally by gut bacteria from fibre, but human evidence for taking it as a supplement is thin and there are no authorised claims. Eating more fibre is the proven, cheaper way to raise your own butyrate; consider this only as an add-on.
- You want to try butyrate in a coated, odourless form
- You already eat plenty of fibre and want to experiment with an add-on
- You have a diagnosed bowel condition and have not checked with your GP or specialist
- You are watching your sodium intake closely
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
The science
Sodium butyrate· evidence: Insufficient
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid that gut bacteria make when they ferment fibre, and it is a main fuel for the cells lining the large bowel. Supplements use sodium butyrate in coated pellets so that it is released further down the gut.
Laboratory and animal research is extensive, but human trials of butyrate supplements are few and small, and results are mixed. There are no authorised health claims, so we make no claims about what it does.
Eating more fibre (oats, beans, lentils, vegetables, wholegrains) is the proven way to increase the butyrate your own gut bacteria produce.
Typical dose: Products typically provide 300 to 1,000 mg of sodium butyrate a day.
Safety: Adds a small amount of sodium. Can cause wind or loose stools at first. If you have a bowel condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP first.
