evidence for zinc carnosine (pepzin gi)

Our honest take

Two capsules give PepZin GI zinc carnosine, supplying 16 mg of zinc and 59 mg of L-carnosine, so the zinc sits under the NHS limit of 25 mg a day. Zinc carnosine is sold for digestive comfort, but the research is limited and mostly small trials, and we make no claims about any gut or stomach condition. At around 45p a day it is expensive for 16 mg of zinc; if you have ongoing stomach symptoms, see your GP first.

  • You specifically want the PepZin GI form of zinc
  • You want a moderate zinc dose in a vegetarian capsule
  • You just want zinc: a plain 15 mg zinc costs a fraction of this
  • You have persistent indigestion, stomach pain or reflux: see your GP rather than self-treating
  • You already take another zinc product, are pregnant, or take tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, without checking with your pharmacist
The science

Zinc carnosine (PepZin GI)· evidence: Limited

Zinc carnosine (polaprezinc) is zinc bound to the amino acid L-carnosine. It is licensed as a medicine for stomach ulcers in Japan, and PepZin GI is the branded version sold as a supplement elsewhere.

Studies have looked at the stomach and gut lining, mostly small trials, many from Japan and many using the prescription product rather than supplements. The results are interesting but the evidence is limited, and we make no claims about any digestive condition.

As a source of zinc it works like any other zinc. If you have ongoing stomach or gut symptoms, see your GP rather than self-treating.

Authorised health claim
Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. (Applies to the zinc content where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 1.5 mg. There are no authorised claims for carnosine or for digestive health.)

Typical dose: Supplements usually give 75 mg of zinc carnosine twice a day, which supplies about 16 mg of zinc in total.

Safety: Count the zinc towards the 25 mg a day the NHS advises not to exceed from supplements. Long-term zinc without copper can cause copper deficiency. Persistent indigestion, stomach pain, or blood in vomit or stools needs a GP, not a supplement.

Zinc· evidence: Moderate

Zinc is a trace mineral needed for the immune system, skin, wound healing and many enzymes. Men need about 9.5 mg a day and women 7 mg in the UK, mostly from meat, shellfish, dairy, bread and cereals. Vegans and vegetarians can fall short because plant foods contain phytates that reduce absorption.

Supplements help people whose intake is low. Zinc lozenges taken at the very start of a cold have been studied with mixed results; tablets swallowed every day by well-fed people are not shown to add much.

Long-term high doses cause problems, mainly by blocking copper absorption, so more is not better.

Authorised health claim
Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. Zinc contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 1.5 mg.)

Typical dose: Adults need about 7 mg (women) to 9.5 mg (men) a day from all sources (NRV on labels: 10 mg). Supplements usually give 5 to 25 mg.

Safety: The NHS advises not taking more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor advises it. Long-term high doses can cause copper deficiency, anaemia and weakened immunity. Zinc can upset the stomach if taken without food, and it reduces absorption of some antibiotics.
