Strong

evidence for plant protein

Our honest take

Despite the name, this is best thought of as a soy and pea protein shake with oat flour and MCT oil added, rather than a complete meal. A 90 g serving gives about 330 kcal and 45 g of protein, which is a lot of protein for the calories. It does not state that it meets the UK rules for meal replacements, so we make no weight-control claims for it. At around £1.40 a serving it is fair value as a high-protein vegan snack; for weight loss, a normal balanced meal with fewer calories works just as well.

  • You are vegan and want a high-protein shake with some carbohydrate and fat
  • You want a filling snack between meals
  • You are allergic to soy or sulphites, or avoid oats
  • You want a nutritionally complete meal replacement: this does not claim to be one
  • You watch your salt: a serving has about 1.6 g, over a quarter of the 6 g daily maximum
The science

Plant protein· evidence: Strong

Plant proteins such as pea, rice, soy, hemp and fava bean count towards your daily protein just like animal proteins. Single plant sources tend to have less leucine and can be low in one or more essential amino acids, which is why many vegan powders blend two or more sources. When the total protein is matched, studies of blended or soy protein generally show similar muscle gains to whey with resistance training.

Check the protein per serving: some plant powders give less protein per scoop than whey.

Authorised health claim
Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass.

Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass.

Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.

Typical dose: 20–40 g of protein per serving

Safety: Check the label for soy or other allergens. Some plant powders have an earthy taste and a grittier texture.

Oats (powdered oat flour)· evidence: Moderate

Powdered oats are simply oats milled fine enough to mix into a shake. They are a wholegrain carbohydrate with some fibre and a little protein, and are a sensible everyday food for active people who need carbohydrate.

A powdered version is a convenience, not an upgrade on a bowl of porridge, and it usually costs more per gram. Oat beta-glucan has authorised claims about blood cholesterol, but only at 3 g of beta-glucan a day, which a single serving of oat powder may not provide, so we do not use them.

Typical dose: Use as much as fits your daily carbohydrate and calorie needs; servings are usually 40–100 g

Safety: Oats are often contaminated with wheat unless labelled gluten-free, so check the label if you have coeliac disease. Flavoured oat powders can contain milk and added sugar.
