evidence for inositol (myo-inositol)
Our honest take
Plain myo-inositol powder with nothing added. The label dose is half a scoop (1 g) a day, so the 240 g tub lasts 240 days at that amount, or 60 to 120 days at the 2 to 4 g a day used in most studies, which makes it much better value than capsules. Inositol is made by the body and found in many foods, it has no NRV and no authorised health claim, and we make no claims about hormones, fertility, mood or blood sugar; if you are considering it for a health condition, speak to your GP first.
- You have discussed inositol with a health professional and want a plain powder
- You prefer a powder you can measure to capsules
- You are hoping to treat a medical condition yourself: see your GP first
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, have diabetes or take regular medication: get advice before using it
- You expect a noticeable effect if you are healthy: there is little evidence for that
The science
Inositol (myo-inositol)· evidence: Limited
Inositol is a sugar-like compound the body makes itself and also gets from foods such as fruit, beans and grains. It is not an essential vitamin, so it has no NRV.
Most research on inositol supplements has been in specific medical conditions, usually at doses of 2–4 g a day. Those studies are mostly small and the results are mixed, and there is no good evidence that healthy people benefit from taking it. There is no authorised health claim for inositol, so we make no claims about what it does.
If you are thinking of taking it for a health condition, speak to your GP first.
Typical dose: Studies have mostly used 2–4 g a day
Safety: Generally well tolerated; larger doses can cause nausea, wind or loose stools. Speak to your GP first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have diabetes or take regular medication.

EFSA. Nutrition and health claims register: no authorised claims for inositol.
