At a glance
Limited
evidence for soluble fibre (resistant dextrin, guar fibre, xos)
Our honest take
Pure Fibersol-2, a resistant dextrin made from corn, as a tasteless powder: 2 level tablespoons (12 g) add 11 g of soluble fibre, over a third of the 30 g a day UK adults are advised to eat, and the 340 g tub gives about 28 servings. It dissolves into any drink, but there are no authorised claims for this fibre and the evidence for specific effects is limited. More beans, oats, vegetables and wholegrains would do the same job for less; this suits people who struggle to eat enough fibre.
- You find it hard to reach 30 g of fibre a day from food
- You want a fibre that is tasteless and does not thicken drinks
- You want a single-ingredient powder
- You take medicines that need careful timing (fibre can slow absorption; ask your pharmacist)
- You have ongoing bowel symptoms that your GP has not checked
- You can easily add more fibre-rich food instead
The science
Soluble fibre (resistant dextrin, guar fibre, XOS)· evidence: Limited
Resistant dextrin (Fibersol-2), partially hydrolysed guar gum (Sunfiber) and xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) are soluble fibres that dissolve without much taste or thickening, so they are easy to add to drinks. They count towards your daily fibre.
Studies on each are mostly small and funded by ingredient makers, with mixed results. There are no authorised health claims for these specific fibres, so we make no claims about what they do beyond adding fibre to your diet.
Most UK adults eat about 20 g of fibre a day against a target of 30 g. Oats, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit and wholegrains are the cheapest way to close that gap.
Typical dose: Typically 3 to 10 g a day; start low and build up.
Safety: Can cause wind and bloating at first. Drink plenty of fluid. Fibre can slow the absorption of some medicines, so take medicines at a different time of day and check with your pharmacist.
