At a glance

Insufficient

evidence for magnesium on the skin (oils, sprays, flakes, lotions)

Our honest take

Magnesium chloride dissolved in water, to spray on the skin or add to a foot soak. Four sprays hold about 66 mg of magnesium, but there is little good evidence that a meaningful amount gets through the skin, so treat this as a skin product rather than a way to raise your magnesium. If you want more magnesium, food or an oral supplement is the route with evidence behind it. It often tingles and can leave a sticky or white residue.

  • You like a magnesium spray or foot soak as part of a massage or bath routine
  • You understand it is not a proven way to raise your magnesium levels
  • You want to correct a low magnesium intake: an oral supplement is the proven route
  • You have sensitive, broken or freshly shaved skin: it often stings
  • You have kidney, heart or breathing problems or take diuretics: the brand advises asking your doctor first
The science

Magnesium on the skin (oils, sprays, flakes, lotions)· evidence: Insufficient

Magnesium sprays, oils, lotions and bath flakes are usually magnesium chloride (or sulfate) in water. They are sold on the idea that magnesium soaks in through the skin. Reviews of the research have found very little good evidence that a meaningful amount does: the skin is a strong barrier, and the few small studies are poor quality and inconsistent.

A warm bath or a massage may feel good in its own right, but if you want to raise your magnesium intake, magnesium from food or an oral supplement is the route with evidence behind it. Claims about sleep, muscles, joints or stress for these products are not authorised.

Typical dose: No established dose. Use as directed on the pack.

Safety: Magnesium chloride sprays often tingle or sting, especially on freshly shaved or broken skin; rinse off if irritation persists. Do not swallow. Keep away from eyes.
