Our honest take

Each pair of capsules gives 100 mg of hyaluronic acid and 900 mg of MSM, and the label allows two pairs a day (200 mg hyaluronic acid, 1.8 g MSM), which is within the range used in oral hyaluronic acid studies. Those studies are small and mostly linked to the companies that make it, MSM has only small trials, and neither has an authorised health claim. At the full four capsules a day it costs about 74p.

  • You want to try oral hyaluronic acid at a studied dose, in vegan capsules
  • You are allergic to shellfish and want a glucosamine-free option
  • You have glaucoma, take regular medication or are pregnant or breastfeeding: NOW advises checking with a doctor
  • You want ingredients with stronger evidence
The science

Hyaluronic acid· evidence: Insufficient

Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) is a molecule found naturally in skin and in the fluid around joints. It is famous as a skin cream ingredient, but taking it by mouth is a different matter: it is a large molecule that is broken down in the gut, and how much reaches skin or joints is unclear.

A small number of trials, mostly in Japan and mostly funded by or linked to companies that make it, have looked at oral hyaluronic acid for skin moisture and for joint comfort, usually at 120–240 mg a day. The results are not strong or independent enough to rely on.

There is no authorised health claim for hyaluronic acid, so we make no claims about its effects on skin or joints.

Typical dose: Studies mostly used 120–240 mg a day

Safety: Appears well tolerated at the doses studied. Some forms are made from rooster combs (check if you avoid poultry); most are made by fermentation. Little safety data in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so avoid unless your doctor advises it.

Kawada C et al. (2014). Ingested hyaluronan moisturizes dry skin. Nutr J 13:70.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)· evidence: Limited

MSM is a sulphur compound found in small amounts in some foods. It is popular in joint and beauty supplements. A handful of small, short trials have looked at it, mostly at 1.5–6 g a day, with modest and inconsistent results, and several were linked to the companies that make it.

There is not enough good evidence to say what it does for healthy people, and there is no authorised health claim for it, so we make no claims about its effects. It appears to be well tolerated at the doses studied.

Typical dose: Studies mostly used 1.5–6 g a day

Safety: Generally well tolerated. Can cause stomach upset, wind or loose stools, and some people find it disturbs sleep if taken late in the day. Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or take blood thinners.
