Our honest take
One tablet gives 7.5 mg of vanadyl sulfate, supplying 1.5 mg of vanadium, about 50 to 100 times what a normal diet provides. Vanadium has not been shown to be essential, there is no good evidence of benefit, and safety at this dose is not established; it is also not on the GB list of minerals permitted in food supplements. We would not recommend it, and we make no claims about blood sugar or diabetes.
- You have been specifically advised to take vanadium by a health professional who knows your medical history
- You have diabetes or take medicines that lower blood sugar: speak to your GP
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have kidney problems
- You are looking for a general mineral supplement: vanadium is not one most people need
The science
Vanadium (vanadyl sulfate)· evidence: Insufficient
Vanadium is a trace element found in tiny amounts in foods such as mushrooms, shellfish, black pepper and grains. It has not been shown to be essential for humans, and there is no NRV.
Vanadyl sulfate has been studied, mostly in small short trials, for blood sugar control and was once popular with bodybuilders. Reviews found no reliable evidence of benefit and frequent stomach side effects. We make no claims about blood sugar or diabetes.
There are no authorised health claims for vanadium.
Typical dose: Diets supply roughly 10 to 30 micrograms a day. Supplements usually give 1 to 2 mg of vanadium, far more than food.
Safety: There is not enough data to set a safe upper level. High doses commonly cause stomach cramps and diarrhoea, and there are concerns about effects on the kidneys. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and speak to your GP if you take diabetes medicines.
