Our honest take
A liquid selenium supplement from KIKI Health, taken as drops in water. UK diets can run low in selenium, so a modest supplement can make sense for some people, but it is easy to take too much if you also eat Brazil nuts or take a multivitamin. There is no good evidence that "ionic" liquid forms work better than tablets. We could not confirm the dose per drop or how long the bottle lasts; at about £21 it is pricey next to selenium tablets.
- You cannot take tablets or capsules and want selenium
- Your diet is low in fish, eggs, meat and nuts
- You already take a multivitamin with selenium or eat Brazil nuts regularly: you may go over safe limits
- You want value: selenium tablets cost much less
- You have a thyroid condition or take regular medication: speak to your GP first
The science
Selenium· evidence: Limited
Selenium is a trace mineral needed for antioxidant enzymes, the immune system and thyroid hormone metabolism. Adults need 60 to 75 µg a day in the UK, from Brazil nuts, fish, meat, eggs and bread. UK intakes are on the low side of recommendations for some people, but clear deficiency is uncommon.
Large trials giving selenium to people who were not deficient (such as SELECT) found no protection against cancer or heart disease, and some hint of a higher risk of type 2 diabetes at higher intakes. Benefits are mainly expected in people who are actually low.
The range between enough and too much is narrow, so it is worth checking total intake from all supplements.
Selenium contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function. Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal nails. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 8.25 µg.)
Typical dose: Adults need about 60 µg (women) to 75 µg (men) a day from all sources (NRV on labels: 55 µg). Supplements usually give 50 to 200 µg.
Safety: The NHS advises that 350 µg a day or less from supplements is unlikely to cause harm; EFSA set a lower adult upper level of 255 µg a day from all sources in 2023. Too much over time can cause hair and nail loss, skin rashes and a garlic smell on the breath. Brazil nuts are very high in selenium, so count them if you also take a supplement.
