Our honest take

OptiMSM, a well-known purified MSM, in a choice of tablets, capsules or powder, all giving 3 g a day. The unflavoured powder is the best value at about 19p a day, and the tablets are about 24p. MSM has only small, short studies with inconsistent results and no authorised health claim, so treat it as an experiment rather than a fix.

The science

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)· evidence: Limited

MSM is a sulphur compound found in small amounts in some foods. It is popular in joint and beauty supplements. A handful of small, short trials have looked at it, mostly at 1.5–6 g a day, with modest and inconsistent results, and several were linked to the companies that make it.

There is not enough good evidence to say what it does for healthy people, and there is no authorised health claim for it, so we make no claims about its effects. It appears to be well tolerated at the doses studied.

Typical dose: Studies mostly used 1.5–6 g a day

Safety: Generally well tolerated. Can cause stomach upset, wind or loose stools, and some people find it disturbs sleep if taken late in the day. Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or take blood thinners.

Ingredients & nutrition

1,500 mg tablets: OptiMSM, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate (vegetable source), hypromellose coating, silicon dioxide. 1 tablet twice a day = 3,000 mg. 120 tablets, 60 daily doses.

1,000 mg capsules (sold as 3,000 mg per serving): OptiMSM in a gelatin capsule. 3 capsules a day = 3,000 mg. 180 capsules (60 daily doses) or 360 capsules (120 daily doses).

Powder: 100% OptiMSM. 3 level scoops (about 3 g) a day. 250 g, about 83 daily doses. Vegan.

How to use

Tablets: 1 tablet twice a day with food. Capsules: 3 capsules a day with food. Powder: 3 level scoops in 240 ml of juice or another drink once a day. Do not exceed the stated daily dose.
