Moderate
evidence for iodine
Our honest take
A capsule combining 400 mg of L-tyrosine with kelp (providing 150 µg of iodine), 2.67 mg of manganese and 57 µg of selenium. Iodine and selenium both have authorised claims for normal thyroid function, and the amounts here are sensible at about 100% of the reference intakes. There is no good evidence that L-tyrosine helps the thyroid in people who eat enough protein, and we make no claims about thyroid conditions. If you have or suspect a thyroid problem, see your GP rather than self-treating.
- You eat little dairy, fish or eggs and want a sensible iodine and selenium top-up
- You are vegan and want iodine from a measured kelp source
- You take thyroid medication: speak to your doctor first
- You are pregnant: the brand advises against it
- You already take a multivitamin with iodine and selenium
The science
Iodine· evidence: Moderate
Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. Adults need about 140 µg a day in the UK, mainly from milk, dairy, eggs and white fish. Salt in the UK is rarely iodised, so people who avoid dairy and fish, including many vegans, can fall short. Getting enough matters most before and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
A modest supplement (around 100 to 150 µg) is a sensible way to cover intake for people with low-iodine diets. There is no benefit to taking large amounts, and both too little and too much can upset thyroid function.
Seaweed and kelp products vary widely in iodine content, and some give far more than is needed.
Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. Iodine contributes to normal cognitive function. Iodine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Iodine contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 22.5 µg.)
Typical dose: Adults need about 140 µg a day from all sources (NRV on labels: 150 µg). Supplements usually give 75 to 150 µg.
Safety: The NHS advises that 0.5 mg (500 µg) a day or less from supplements is unlikely to cause harm; EFSA's adult upper level from all sources is 600 µg a day. Higher intakes can disturb thyroid function. Anyone with a thyroid condition, or taking thyroid medicine, should speak to their GP before taking iodine.

Selenium· evidence: Limited
Selenium is a trace mineral needed for antioxidant enzymes, the immune system and thyroid hormone metabolism. Adults need 60 to 75 µg a day in the UK, from Brazil nuts, fish, meat, eggs and bread. UK intakes are on the low side of recommendations for some people, but clear deficiency is uncommon.
Large trials giving selenium to people who were not deficient (such as SELECT) found no protection against cancer or heart disease, and some hint of a higher risk of type 2 diabetes at higher intakes. Benefits are mainly expected in people who are actually low.
The range between enough and too much is narrow, so it is worth checking total intake from all supplements.
Selenium contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function. Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal nails. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 8.25 µg.)
Typical dose: Adults need about 60 µg (women) to 75 µg (men) a day from all sources (NRV on labels: 55 µg). Supplements usually give 50 to 200 µg.
Safety: The NHS advises that 350 µg a day or less from supplements is unlikely to cause harm; EFSA set a lower adult upper level of 255 µg a day from all sources in 2023. Too much over time can cause hair and nail loss, skin rashes and a garlic smell on the breath. Brazil nuts are very high in selenium, so count them if you also take a supplement.

L-tyrosine· evidence: Limited
L-tyrosine is an amino acid found in protein foods such as meat, fish, dairy, eggs and beans. The body uses it to make thyroid hormones and brain chemicals such as dopamine, and it can also make it from another amino acid, phenylalanine.
Small studies have looked at single doses during short bursts of stress, cold or sleep loss, with some positive results on mental performance, but there is no good evidence that taking it daily helps thyroid function in people who eat enough protein. EFSA did not authorise any health claims for it.
Typical dose: 500 mg to 2 g in studies, usually as a single dose before a demanding task.
Safety: Do not take with MAO-inhibitor antidepressants, or if you take thyroid medicine, without medical advice. Not recommended in pregnancy. People with phenylketonuria should follow specialist advice.
