Our honest take
A herbal-led blend taken as 1 capsule twice a day: 500 mg of shatavari, 100 mg each of sage and maca extracts and 50 mg of Siberian ginseng, with 40 mg of magnesium, 5 mg of vitamin B6 and 75 µg of chromium. The vitamin B6 and magnesium are the only ingredients with authorised claims, and the magnesium amount is small; the herbs have little good evidence, and we make no claims about the perimenopause or its symptoms. If symptoms are affecting your life, speak to your GP, who can discuss HRT and other options.
- You want magnesium and B6 in one product alongside botanicals
- You have checked with your GP that the herbs suit you
- You take diabetes medicines (chromium and ginseng may affect blood sugar), blood thinners or HRT, unless your GP agrees
- You already take other B6 supplements (the FSA advises no more than 10 mg a day long term)
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic to asparagus or have a hormone-sensitive condition
The science
Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)· evidence: Insufficient
Shatavari is the root of a wild asparagus used in Ayurvedic tradition, particularly in products for women. Most research is laboratory or animal work, and good-quality human trials are scarce.
There are no authorised health claims for shatavari, so we make no claims about what it does.
Typical dose: Products typically give 500 mg to 2 g of root powder or extract a day.
Safety: Avoid if you are allergic to asparagus. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, as safety data are limited. Speak to your GP first if you take diuretics, diabetes medicines or other regular medication.
Research we looked at:
Alok S et al. (2013). Plant profile, phytochemistry and pharmacology of Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari): a review. Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease 3(3):242-251.
Maca· evidence: Insufficient
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable from the high Andes, eaten as food in Peru and sold as a powder or extract. It is mainly marketed for energy, libido and mood.
A handful of small trials have looked at these areas, with some positive but inconsistent findings, and reviews describe the evidence as limited. There are no authorised health claims for maca, so we make no claims about what it does.
Typical dose: Studies have mostly used 1.5 to 3 g a day of root powder.
Safety: Generally well tolerated as a food. Maca is a brassica and contains goitrogens, so speak to your GP first if you have a thyroid condition. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, as there is little safety data.
