evidence for multivitamin and mineral

Our honest take

A broad multivitamin and mineral with 80 mg of coenzyme Q10, beta-glucan and a superfood blend, taken as 2 vegan capsules a day. The vitamins and minerals are the useful part: 40 µg of vitamin D, 150 µg of iodine and 150 µg of selenium, with vitamin B6 at 10 mg, right at the FSA's long-term limit, and only 2 mg of iron. CoQ10 has no authorised claims and healthy people make their own. At about 84p a day it costs more than a standard multivitamin, so it only makes sense if you specifically want the CoQ10 in the same capsule.

  • You want a multivitamin and CoQ10 in one capsule
  • You prefer a UK practitioner brand in a vegetarian capsule
  • You already take a multivitamin or separate vitamin A, B6, iron or zinc (check the totals)
  • You take warfarin or other regular medication without checking with your pharmacist
  • You are pregnant or trying to conceive and the formula is not designed for pregnancy
The science

Multivitamin and mineral· evidence: Limited

A multivitamin puts a spread of vitamins and minerals into one daily dose. If you eat a varied diet, large studies and reviews have not found that a daily multivitamin makes healthy adults live longer or stay healthier, so most people do not need one.

They can be useful for filling specific gaps: people on restrictive diets, vegans (who need a reliable source of vitamin B12), older adults who eat less, and anyone in the UK who wants the 10 µg of vitamin D the NHS advises in autumn and winter. Pregnancy needs its own product with 400 µg of folic acid and no retinol.

Check the label rather than the front of the pack. Some products are well balanced at around 100% of the reference intake; others use very high doses of a few nutrients (for example vitamin B6 over 10 mg) or give only token amounts of minerals. More is not better.

Authorised health claim
Claims only apply to a product that gives at least 15% of the NRV of that nutrient per daily dose. Typical authorised claims for nutrients found in multivitamins are:

Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

Vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

Typical dose: One daily dose providing around 100% of the NRV for most vitamins; no need for mega-doses

Safety: Add up what you get from all your supplements. UK advice: no more than 10 mg a day of vitamin B6 from supplements long term; no more than 25 mg of zinc; no more than 1.5 mg of vitamin A from food and supplements, and avoid retinol (vitamin A) supplements in pregnancy; no more than 100 µg of vitamin D without medical advice. Iron is rarely needed by men or post-menopausal women, and iron overdose is dangerous to young children. Talk to your GP if you take warfarin (vitamin K) or other regular medicines. Biotin can distort some blood test results.

Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone and ubiquinol)· evidence: Limited

Coenzyme Q10 is made by the body and is involved in energy production inside cells. It comes in two forms: ubiquinone and ubiquinol (the reduced form, such as Kaneka QH). The body converts between them, and ubiquinol is usually more expensive.

Studies have looked at CoQ10 for energy, exercise and in people taking statins or with heart conditions, with mixed results. EFSA reviewed the proposed claims for CoQ10 and did not authorise any, so we make no claims about what it does. Healthy people make their own CoQ10, and there is little evidence that topping it up helps them.

Typical dose: Supplements typically give 30 to 200 mg a day, taken with a meal containing fat.

Safety: Generally well tolerated; can cause mild stomach upset or trouble sleeping if taken late. CoQ10 may reduce the effect of warfarin and may lower blood pressure or blood sugar slightly, so speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take these medicines. Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice.
